"Ya can't just say the words and, poof, it's done? Sounds like it's a lot of trouble to keep up the good magic."
Others might have found Launchpad's point a bit too demanding or annoying, but Mateo got that magic was tricky to understand, and the talking duck person did admitting for good magic being harder. Mateo nodded and almost answered further but Basil was commenting to keep a lookout and (more grabbing perhaps) Queen Elsa's request drew him over. He took a seat as she further requested, and had just paused a bit unsure on that, listening as she went on.
”I was just interested in knowing more, what kind of defensive spells you can cast.”

At first Mateo worried that this whole Protection Spells being tricky was going to...well make things tricky again, to explain and in his aiding, but as good rulers normally did, Queen Elsa moved from problem to Best Help.
Mateo still wasn't sure they had all of everything on their side, and many books he needed were back home, but as he would state later when asked on it, he could do more than his doubts at times whispered, if he would but recall he could.
"Defense spells are easier, yes", Mateo admitted with a small smile, "Still the same...spurts of magic versus...force fields but...more permanent in all that", and hopefully he didn't make that sound too bad, especially since they would be defending against animals as startled as they no doubt at their sudden arrival. Too bad Skylar and the other Jaquins weren't here. They could have no doubt been much help now...though with this Tarzan now...
Mateo briefly watched Captain Swann try to detour the wild man's almost childish explorations with another smile as he formatted his other reply. He stood a bit to peer at the side of the boat pondering and then the canopy they had.
"As I said...I can't do anything too lasting but I wonder...if I hit the canopy maybe a spell would...expand more than one place...". Or he'd destroy the canopy...
"I'll only try it if it seems we need", and with everyone about the sides, practice was far too risky until absolutely needed.
Trying to be concise in his answering, Mateo took a seat again. "I'm still learning some of this", he admitted in the interest of full disclosure, "Um, but when I levitate or float something it stays up until I call it back down, so...that could help. Knocking back or down with a blast is forceful and could buy time".
Mateo didn't count turning anything to stone, even having done such to the evil wizard Fiero, but that had been more sending his own spell back at him.
He...could try the word maybe...Ackatok......but refused to dabble with dark magic! Even for good it sounded bad and risky.
Mateo recalled who he was taking to and earlier, though. He paused a bit but then figured maybe going on wouldn't be too forward.
"I...the kind of magic I know is spells. If...I'm being to forward let me know please but...how did you...create snow for our poor guide earlier out of nothing?" Mateo asked curious and slightly awed.
