Who am I? Just a conscience!
Hey, howdy, hey! The name's Neo, and I wished upon a star from HOW DID YOU FIND US?. My other imaginary friends include Jake and Shere Khan. Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed and I are so very eager to join the Worlds of Disney circle of life!
Character name: Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed
Age: Varies (Shenzi: 29 Banzai: 28 Ed: 28)
Movie: The Lion King
Custom title: The Hyena Trio
Why'd you pick this character? The hyenas were always a favorite when it came to the Lion King. They were full of humor, and yet they were also dangerous. I see them less as bad guys, and more as characters who do what they must to survive, taking any chance they get. It is that reason why they joined Scar. I wanted to continue their story past the first movie, and show what happened behind the scenes, and go into their motivations.
Character appearance (try to get at least 2 or 3 sentences for each section)
Hair description: While all three have the same grey fur and tan bellies, only Shenzi has hair. Shenzi’s hair is more unkempt, being messed up and spiky with six bangs. This makes her stand out more amongst the trio, as Banzai and Ed don’t have any hair besides their fur.
Facial description/mood/expressions: All three have unique characteristics that separate one from the other. For Shenzi, she has a larger nose, patches around her eyes that resemble eye-shadow, and thicker lips that are black. She also has a longer snout, compared to the other two.
Banzai’s main facial traits is his heavier eyebrows, which gives him a meaner look. Besides this, he appears to resemble any other male hyena that was in seen in Africa. As for Ed, he lacks any eyebrows, and often times, his tongue hangs out. He is often seen with a wall-eyed expression, which shows his simple-minded personality.
Clothing style: The hyenas, like any animal in Africa, don’t wear any clothing.
Body build: Each hyena has the same body type. They all walk on four legs, and are capable of running long distances. This is extremely useful when chasing after prey, or trying to flee from a larger, more fearsome animal. As such, they have a standard build for a hyena.
Any unique traits (optional): For Shenzi, it is her hair. Banzai has his heavy eyebrows and mean look. And Ed, has a cross-eyed look all the time.
Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
For Shenzi, there is a sense of cunning that is hidden away behind her humor. She is a strong leader, being able to lead all of the hyenas within the elephant graveyard. Alongside her leadership skills, she is a strong diplomat, as she was able to convince the pack that Scar turned against them, and that they need to venture out to find a place to hide from the lions following Simba’s rise. She has a deep desire to strengthen and protect her clan, and she isn’t afraid to ally with someone so long as they can provide for her and the clan. She also has respect for anyone who is is a good leader, such as Mufasa.
Banzai is the more aggressive out of the trio. He often thinks about food, is quick to get angered, and is known to be impulsive when around others. Despite this, he is Shenzi’s second, having the same intellect as she does. He knows a bit of other languages, as he knows Pig Latin, Spanish, and French. Banzai also has a streak of bad luck, as he always seems to be on the receiving end of injuries.
Ed, is often referred to as the ‘idiot’ of the group, even though Shenzi and Banzai treat him as an equal. Ed doesn’t speak. Instead, Ed laughs whenever he opens his mouth. He always seems to have a simple mind. In reality, Ed is capable of thinking, despite his speech impediment. He knows how to corner prey, and he realizes when something is getting away, or when an ally betrays them. As a result, Banzai often acts as Ed’s translator, even though the two tend to get into a fight due to Banzai’s short temper, and Ed’s lack of any. Ed also displays an interest in music, and he often enjoys playing them in order to express himself.
Shenzi was the first born out of the trio. Her mother and father lived within the elephant graveyard, and ever since, she grew up there. Her parents did their best to feed her whatever scraps they could find, and often, she would have to fight others just to get a meal. It was a hard life, being a hyena. But it wasn’t long until she made a few friends to help her out.
Banzai and Ed were born of the same liter, with Banzai being the oldest by only a few minutes. Back then, Banzai was less quick tempered, and Ed was normal. The two hyenas often got into trouble with their crazy shenanigans, often with the other hyena pups. The two even developed a method of communicating, so no one would catch on. As such, it was during one of these shenanigans that Shenzi met Banzai and Ed. Though instead of getting mad at them, Shenzi showed respect to them, and insisted on helping them out with getting the most meals.
However, in time, the other pups caught on. A group of the stronger hyenas corned Ed one day while he was by himself, and while Shenzi and Banzai were discussing ideas. When they returned, they found Ed on the floor, and the other hyenas beating him up. Banzai snapped, and warded the other hyenas off, but it was too late. The young hyena was mentally scarred, and relied on other methods to communicate. This gave away to the Ed that everyone knows today.
As the years passed, the hyenas grew. And as they grew, so did their influence. Shenzi knew how to handle Banzai and Ed, and as a result, she understood what was needed in order to stand above the other hyenas. She had to be tough, smart, and cunning. With the help of Banzai, who acted as her strongman, and Ed, who was the more unpredictable member of the trio, Shenzi rose up the ranks and eventually became a well respected member of the clan. And she was sure to include Banzai and Ed in her new position.
The three were inseparable. You would never see one without the others, and if you did, the other two were often nearby somewhere. Every hyena knew who they were. And in time, their names became even more notorious, as they ventured out to hunt for food within the Pridelands, and beyond.
It was their first hunt in the Pridelands that brought the introduction of Mufasa. The lion made sure that no animal within the Pridelands would be hunted, and if they had to, it would be done out of respect to something called ‘The Circle of Life’. At that time, the three didn’t understand the concept of it. Shenzi had a bit more of an understanding, yet Banzai only cared about food, and Ed...well, he was Ed.
The hyenas would continue to try to get food within the Pridelands though. They would sometimes succeed, but only if the time was right. As a result of the many failures though, the hyenas developed a dislike for the lions. And the trio was often the ones dealing with the brunt of the lions’ attempts at keeping them out.
And then, there was Scar.
Scar was the only lion who developed a respect to the hyenas. After another failed hunt, the lion showed up at the graveyard. The trio demanded to know why he was here, as lions were often trying to get rid of the hyenas. However, Scar instead offered to help them, and even offered a slab of meat for them to eat as a reason to trust him. Banzai and Ed were quick to take the offer, yet Shenzi… she had a feeling the lion was up to something. It was just a matter of playing his game until the truth was revealed.
In the next few months, the hyenas were visited by Scar. They learned that Mufasa was going to have a cub, and if the cub lived till adulthood, then the cub would become the next king. At first, the three didn’t know why Scar was interested in the cub. But after the cub was born, and a few months passed, Scar revealed one part of his plan: to have the hyenas kill the cub, Simba, when he wanders into the graveyard.
Shenzi started to connect the dots. Banzai and Ed were eager to do the task, and Shenzi... she figured that killing the cub would deal a blow to the lions’ morale. What they didn’t expect, was for Mufasa to show up and chase them off before the task could be done. Scar, as expected, was disappointed in them. But he soon revealed his real goal: to have Mufasa and Simba be killed, and for him to be the new king. And under his rule, the hyenas would never go hungry.
The plan was simple, and easy: get the water buffalo on a stampede, have the cub be killed during the stampede, and have Mufasa be killed while trying to rescue the cub. However, while Scar killed Mufasa, Simba was able to get away. The hyenas were confident that the cub wouldn’t return, but deep down, Shenzi had doubts about Scar. The lion was cruel, and cared about the hyenas. And yet, was he the best choice for them?
Their answer came years later. Scar’s reign brought recklessness to the Pridelands. The hyenas over-hunted, and on the last year of Scar’s reign, a drought affected the land. There was no food, no water, no nothing. Banzai realized just how better they were under Mufasa’s rule, despite being chased out all the time, and Shenzi confronted Scar on the matter. But did Scar care? He did not. He only cared about himself, his reign, and making sure it stays that way.
A personality fitting for a mad king.
But the reign did not last. The cub, now grown, returned, much to the trio’s shock. Simba challenged Scar to combat, despite believing he was the one who killed his father, leaving the three to deal with Simba’s allies. However, defeating a meerkat and a warthog was more of a challenge, as the two were able to hold their ground against Shenzi and her group. They were unable to defeat Simba’s allies, and instead turned their attention on aiding Scar… just in time to overhear Scar blaming them for Mufasa’s death.
Shenzi, fed up with everything that happened, declared that the real enemy was Scar, not Simba, and that they were wrong for trusting him. The others were convinced, but the sudden appearance of a certain meerkat, and Banzai’s temper, forced the hyenas into another chase, which ultimately led to them being kicked off Pride Rock, just in time for Scar to be thrown off. And when Scar was thrown off Pride Rock, Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed confronted him. He begged for mercy, for them to trust him.
They wouldn’t give him any of that.
With the battle over, Shenzi led the hyenas away from the Pridelands before the lions could find them. They fled the elephant graveyard, going further away in order to find a new home. It took days, but eventually, they would find a nice valley miles away from their old home. It was here where they would start anew. And the three would take their position as the de-facto leaders of the hyena clan.
In the coming years, rumors appeared in the clan. Some talked about Scar’s return, how his spirit lingered and attempted to build a new army to kill Simba. Others, talked about a group of lions who were casted out of the Pridelands, and their leader, who was a devoted follower of Scar. A few hyenas wanted to look out for themselves. Others, thought about making peace with the lions. Whatever the case, Shenzi had one goal: to keep the clan safe.
And with Banzai and Ed, she would make sure that goal was met.
