Just because Mateo had been willingly enough persuaded by Héctor to move from Coronado Springs to next door of the Rivera's Villa in Grand Floridian (with room for a new wizards workshop and all!) didn’t mean the young wizard didn’t at times go back to the area with such an Avaloran feel, just to wander.
That and the magic shows he did for the kids of the hotel were still a hit, though he could do them anywhere.
Including the equally Avaloran-feeling Mexico Showcase.
Mateo wasn’t doing a magic show currently.
As he’d told both Panchito and Héctor, his Tamborita could be a musical instrument also, or started as one, but normal drums were safer.
He'd walked by, declining joining the local Mariachi band of the place once; they didn’t let him do it again, and not after some unintentional toe-tapping gave away his inherent dance skills. They even found a normal drum to let him borrow, and since he wasn't sure about using his wand. Despite a long ban on music of his own, Mateo picked up music and dance quick too, and had a...not bad voice...
It was not Dia de los Muertos yet, but Mateo was letting the band in on the Avaloran song Festival of Love.
Which was toe-tapping enough. The band seemed intrigued to learn it too.
Mateo executed a quick spin along with tapping the drum he held in time to the guitars and trumpet.
<Ok, so obviously cut Elena's side part and it's most of the chorus Mateo's teaching the band ^^>>

Mama Imelda needed flour, actual flour, and as shops were hard to know exactly where to find, Rosa was just making rounds trying to solve the conundrum. Miguel and Papa Héctor were out, and so it had fallen to her for Mama Imelda to ask.
Her Great-Great-Grandmother had also paused her as she nodded and headed out.
“Mija...flour you grind. Not the plant...”.
Rosa had been confused why Mama Imelda felt the need to specify. Who would mix that up?
She took her violin case just in case the mission was a bust and she was left with time and nothing to do. Why not play? She enjoyed it.
As Rosa darted down the streets of the Mexico Showcase (figuring why not ask) the sound of music caught her attention. Mariachi at that. Not surprising perhaps.
Well with Papa Héctor an expert and all, she had a duty to see how good they were Rosa decided.
As she followed the sound of the music (still an odd thing to walk towards it) Rosa thought she caught a half familiar voice.
She figured it right before peering around a bend and spotting the band. Ah, right Mateo de Alva. Not a bad older teen, if he didn’t live right next door and so she didn’t doubt her guardians' intentions (or Papa Héctor's more specifically!).
Miss Helen seemed to think he was cool too, so she was sure she and Vi were in the same boat except Miss Helen didn’t pry, same as Mama Imelda didn’t.
If any of the adults were here, Rosa would have avoided the other teen just ‘cause, but as it wouldn’t cause problems, Rosa studied his and the bands’ form, not that she knew much herself on true musical form.
Aww, it was a sweet song about memory! To a catchy beat!
Her foot started moving before she realized it. Rosa thought, then smiled and slipped her violin case off discreetly.
Opening it and prepping her violin, she listened a few more moments to catch the beat, and then seamlessly (hopefully) started up to match what the band and Mateo were doing as she stepped out and skipped over with a small smile.

When playing with his family, for events such as Navidad, Mateo often just played a harmless, non-magical tambourine in a perhaps guessable move, but he supposed the concept of the drum he borrowed off the band was the same, and he quickly acclimated to the more hollow sounds produced and worked it in.
There had been all manner of instruments stowed in his basement when Shuriki outlawed music, and Mateo had at least tested out every one of them. It was the magic he'd had to hide from his own family, unbeknownst to him, his mother knowing about that all along.
As Mateo showed off a bit more of his footwork the sound of a fiddle, or violin, layered in so well he hardly noticed at first. Glancing over he noticed Héctor's granddaughter, (or great-great was it?) Rosa. Both her and Miguel were also talented with instruments too, Mateo had realized by now, though the words between all three had been a bit sparse at best.
Surprisingly Mateo had thought of the very same suspicion Rosa did, but when Miss Helen mentioned his knowing Violet, he forgot to be sort of afraid of her too. Especially with how much Héctor already liked him.
So he just gave a smile back, and kept up the drum beat while he paused the singing, "Hey! I was just teaching them a song Princess Elena taught us last Dia de los Muertos", he had been her for a few so even his last term was a bit off. But the last he'd been in Avalor for. "You're doing good to just jump in like that!", he grinned, and meant the comment nicely.
"You don't think your grandfather would hate the song, do you?", he next checked, only skipping backwards away from her as he kept up the dance beats.

Mateo explained that his kingdom's Princess Elena had taught them the song, supposedly when music was brought back for the kingdom as well, though the reasons behind both bans couldn't be more different. Or...maybe not so far. Mateo's own grandfather had gone on the run, he'd said, and that had to have been hard on his mother.
"It's very catchy! Gracias", she added to his compliment, and seemed to just pass it off, but given she'd only been playing a year, the further compliment was reassuring to hear! And Mateo didn't have to say it like her family maybe did.
"You to, though I suppose the tambourine's like I teased my brother on the accordion and kind of easy", she grinned, and wasn't really teasing him; so it wasn't actually rude. After he went and saved the hotel, she supposed she shouldn't do that, though imagining a kid two years older than her doing that was still baffling.
She had to laugh as he asked if Papa Héctor would hate the song, or take offense. "It's...the intent he really cares about", she answered, and could have gone on to explain more of the story, but not here, "And this one seems all about love so...no, I don't think he would".
Rosa glanced to the band, but those that could, the guitarists, just smiled or nodded and kept up the musical background without interruption.

Mateo grinned when Rosa called the song catchy, even though he hadn't made it up or anything, but that just meant he was recalling and explaining it well. He gave a gracious nod such as was just his style as she thanked him for his compliment. "I take it you haven't been practicing in a basement...like I did...so...it really is good, for a year and all, like you said, uh...", Mateo doubted a bit if that came out as the compliment he was intending.
He then stopped all out and blinked at her further words and...
"Oh no, not three of you...", he muttered before he could stop himself, then went on to try to explain with a small smile, "Sorry it's just...you kinda remind me of my friend Naomi...even more than Princess Andrina does! And her's is a little...", Mateo paused on how to try to say over the top; that it didn't come off as light and just enough as Naomi and Rosa's.
He shook his head, especially over wondering how she and Elena were doing, and Gabe, anyway.
Rosa explained that Héctor probably wouldn't be insulted by the song, since the intent behind it was good and all. "Oh good, when I called the alters...well alters, he corrected me that they were Ofrendas so...I wasn't sure", he shrugged.
He followed Rosa's gaze to the band and then back. They'd stopped as he did in Rosa throwing out a joke almost the same as Naomi would. As she glanced back, Mateo smiled again.

Mateo had manners enough to impress Abuelita; and Mama and Tía Gloria would just pinch his cheeks. Rosa smiled, and then had to laugh at his next statement, more than question, that she had not been practicing her music in a basement! "No, that was my primo, Miguel, attic though...", she answered back readily enough with another grin, one which then fell.
"Honestly...it's not good at all that he had to, but...", how to explain the whole family's well intentioned restrictions? Rosa got more worried she'd insulted Mateo as he seemed bothered by her teasing, or not really, he explained.
Rosa tilted her head as Mateo explained his friend, Naomi, who seemed to tease him too. And some other princess, though as a Royal Wizard, Rosa wasn't surprised if Mateo met plenty of those, even here.
"Over the top?", Rosa guessed on what Mateo was trying to describe Princess Andrina's teasing as. "How many princesses do you know?", she next had to ask, just curious.
"Oh good, when I called the alters...well alters, he corrected me that they were Ofrendas so...I wasn't sure"
"Eh, Corn, Maíz", Rosa shrugged, brushing it off as a difference in dialects more than words, though her example was English vs. Spanish.
Mateo then asked if she knew any songs. Rosa thought. Not as many as she'd like...
"Um...well...", if she picked up one habit from her Papa Héctor perhaps, Rosa often rubbed one arm with her other hand when she was fidgeting nervously, like when the whole family had sort of ganged up on Miguel after his (later wrong) revelation about Ernesto de la Cruz and he'd later run off. With her violin propped by her feet in a way that was probably also just bad to do to an instrument, Rosa went through the gesture again.
"Not as many as I should, maybe...I was taught to avoid it, but...Miguel and Papa Héctor...wrote a few, um and I know those...", but she didn't know how to teach them...
"Uh, as for the beats though...", she grimaced and her foot joined her hand and scuffed the floor.

Even knowing a bit of the back history, Mateo paused as Rosa answered that he was close enough in that Miguel had had to hide in the attic! Honestly it sounded like he and Miguel had quite the sort of similar situations, though he'd been hiding magic, again.
Music too though, what with Shuriki's laws.
"Honestly...it's not good at all that he had to, but..."
Mateo instantly understood where Rosa was coming from. Honestly it was like listening to his own mother and grandmother (when she'd still been alive) discuss it. Truth vs. Safety and hiding, but sort of the same. "Yeah, but they thought it was best?" he guessed not too wrongly, though again knew enough to know the adults had made the major decisions, as they often had to.
Over the top was a pretty good sum up, and Mateo laughed and nodded, wondering if Rosa had met the mermaid princess yet, and meaning no insult to her; next chuckling at the question of how many princesses he knew.
"Oh, well, there's Princess Elena of course, and her sister Isabel. Here...Princess Andrina, um, and that's about it, also a queen, Queen Elsa", but lest Mateo make himself out to sound more grand than he was, and it wasn't like knowing all of them meant any better things for him personally.
Rosa had just been slightly unsure/apologetic at her cousin having to hide his music. Mateo got the feeling he'd really messed up asking what he had on what she knew.
"Hey...it's ok, you're talking to the kid who once almost blew a hole in the kitchen floor with just starting secret magic so...I get it, it's hard to absorb all at once, uh...I was just asking, sorry, but you were doing really good jumping in", he made sure to tell her; whatever she knew on beats, of felt she did. Mateo glanced back to the band, maybe they had suggestions that they could just follow.

Mateo excused away Rosa trying to explain her family in a way; a good way. She gave a small smile, "Yeah". As for why she had teased Miguel like she did...she would do that anyway and with anything."And, good for us, he didn't hold any grudges and even helped me and my brother learn instruments; but I know being self-taught is hard just from having my primo help me, so...that's cool that you can do both Magic and follow a beat". Again, she was one to talk, though Rosa could follow a beat just fine!
She seemed to guess right with Over the Top for this Princess Andrina, and again, as long as they could tease a princess like that! Even after staying with Queen Elsa, Rosa was unsure on the rules.
Speaking of which...
"Oh, well, there's Princess Elena of course, and her sister Isabel. Here...Princess Andrina, um, and that's about it, also a queen, Queen Elsa"
Rosa had just listened half-amused. Then her eyes went wide. "You know Queen Elsa!", she sounded stunned. "Oh! Yeah, I stayed with her for a bit, before I found mi familia! Yeah, she's...great", was an understatement, but...
Rosa was glad she had stopped and talked with Mateo (though she would still not be letting Papa Héctor hear about it!), he was a good friend to have, she could already tell, and she shouldn't let her great-great-grandfather's prying get in the way of that.
Honestly, Rosa knew what it was anyway, well, thought she did, he never got to freak out about Mama Coco and Papa Julio, and probably regretted it.
Rosa was more than flattered to let him practice all his paternal stuff on her and Miguel.
"Hey...it's ok, you're talking to the kid who once almost blew a hole in the kitchen floor with just starting secret magic so...I get it, it's hard to absorb all at once, uh...I was just asking, sorry, but you were doing really good jumping in"
The young violinist smiled gratefully again, and noticed Mateo glance to the band as if for other ideas. They should be a further problem, adults with ideas, or...she could not let them be, like Papa Héctor had always been talking about. Drown out the world.
Taking the encouragement, and not thinking about it too far, Rosa lifted her violin and fit the bow herself, she might not be able to explain the notes she was playing, but she could still just let them flow out, and did so, starting off with a slow strain, before adding a bit of lilting to it.

Mateo gave a small smile of gratitude as Rosa praised his following both magic and a beat, and from self-taught. "Well, again, you too", he gave back again with another smile. Things just got more surprising on his end too, though, and Rosa knew Queen Elsa! It shouldn't really have surprised him, given how much of an effort the queen made in greeting what New Arrivals she could and helping them adjust.
He'd been half afraid, when he told Rosa about blowing a hold in his kitchen floor, of a comment about like what Naomi would have thrown at him; but then Naomi had he had been going to school long enough for her to do such, and taking encouragement, as she was, Rosa probably wasn't going to throw back just then anyway.
She took to his encouragement and soon fitted her bow at the violin and a string of notes came out. "Oh, yeah, ok", Mateo listened to the notes, tilting his head this way and that with the beat as he picked it up, then grinning and shrugging, "Yeah I don't know how you'd put that on paper either, but we got it I think! Right Señors?", he grinned over to the band and then, simple as it was or not, started in following her beat with a low drum layering and until the band took up backing them up once again. He gave a grin and then spun, trying to maybe get Rosa to follow and just in helping a friend and helping her loosen up.

Rosa had been worried about how easily Mateo, and the band, would be able to follow along with her now, and if she couldn’t explain what she was doing; but they were professionals! Or the band was. And Mateo wasn’t half bad either!
Mateo said he didn’t know how it went onto paper either, and Rosa decided to believe him. Smiling, she twirled, and increased the beat, doing as Papa Héctor was always telling her, and losing herself to the music and not worrying about even what this excursion with Mateo may look like to either the band or even him if he found out!
Not that she was quite to the point of telling him herself. Finishing out the strand of the beat she’d been working on with a grand flourish such as she’d also been working at perfecting, Rosa grinned and lifted the bow from off the violin. She might have gone on to comment to Mateo something else, but caught a slight round of applause. They'd been noticed, probably especially in that last improve.
Rather than back off, as she still felt slight temptation to, or hide, Rosa side glanced to Mateo then gave a slight nod of accepting the accolade, as she was still getting used to.

This had been what Avalor had been missing so long; The Riveras too probably; Mateo pondered as Rosa showed them the beat that was trapped in her head and she couldn’t explain, but could still demonstrate quite well!
Mateo grinned and followed along all but seamlessly himself!
It could be argued he didn't have much to have fun with, only playing the drums, but Mateo had early on found his musical back up calling in the tambourine (much like with his magic calling) and so he knew how to make a beat that perfect amount of back-up aiding without taking too much itself, but allowing for it's own flare, and the drums seemed to do such even a bit better!
Mateo laughed as Rosa gave a spin off his example, and executed another of his own, listening as she finished up in an all but perfect lift to the music and for it's final note. Though he'd been one of the one's performing with her and the band, Mateo shifted his own drum to clap, then noticing the small crowd himself and grinning sheepishly.
He wasn't used to performing for audiences either. Rosa nodded to them, and Mateo noticed the band motioning them to take a bit more of the credit than that. With his own smile he gave a bow and waiting until they had all dispersed to grin over to Rosa again. "That was great, Rosa, gracias", he extended over a hand and shook hers in shared camaraderie. "You guys too", he nodded to the band. But maybe they should let them get back to what they had planned. Placing the drum back where he had loaned it from, Mateo gave a nod to the band and then Rosa before excusing himself, and letting Rosa learn more off the band if she wished, or however she would take it. He knew he'd see her and Violet around given his close quarters now and the Parrs often visiting.

Ronno: Aw thanks Panchito: Sprx hasn't a seizure since about 9:15 yesterday mornings hopefully the medicine's taking effect.
