Reuben was ready to go the instant he got off work. He had plans for the evening. He'd decided to pay a visit to Discovery Island tonight, under the cover of darkness. He was less likely to be seen this way, at least by crew members. Other "VIP's" weren't as likely to make a fuss. And if he was caught, he could simply explain that he was an employee and that he thought he saw someone trespassing. Not that he wanted to deal with that situation. It'd be too bothersome. That's why he was traveling there in the evening. He almost snickered at the thought of them trying to ban him from the parks. Yeah...the barrier wouldn't allow it.
While at work, he'd overheard two customers discussing Discovery Island, an island zoo abandoned for roughly 20 years. Seeing as he was trapped in a theme park full of tourists, it sounded exactly like the quiet spot he was looking for. He'd stowed several sandwiches, dressing packets, and a couple sodas, as well as a light weight navy blue flash light in his khaki canvas satchel. It'd been a half an hour to the dock by bus ride. From there he'd made his way to a boat he'd hidden away. He was lucky enough to find it. It'd been in bad condition when he
did, but with his mechanical expertise he'd managed to fix it within an hour. He'd also made improvements. The engine purred quietly, and the boat sped quickly, cutting through water lit by a rapidly fading sunset. He'd only need a couple minutes to reach the island. He didn't see any boats in the vicinity, so his trip to the island likely wasn't spotted by anyone.
He slowed the boat down and parked it at the waiting dock. There was barely any light to see by. Taking the flashlight out of his satchel, Reuben pointed the beam into the wilderness. Management claimed to have shut it down due to poor attendance and high maintenance. Shame. But at least it resulted in a quiet, crowd free space.
He found a spot facing the dwindling sunset, ate a meatball sub, and downed a Sprite while he watched the remainder of the sunset. When it had darkened enough, he prepared to explore the rest of the island. He took his trash with him, he almost wanted to leave it considering the place was abandoned and probably full of stuff that'd be considered garbage anyways.
Using the flash light, he wandered around the island. The beam exposed many disused items. There was a blue foldout chair sitting next to a rusted workout bike. He almost wanted to lie down, but he ultimately decided to move on. He wasn't here to any urban exploration...No...he was here to see what he might be able to do with all this free property. He'd been concerned about noise pollution, but it had been much quieter than he'd expected. If he was Jumba, he'd probably see the potential for a makeshift lab in this place. As an evil genius who'd created at least 625 experiments (minus 262) for the purposes of chaos, confusion, and destruction, he likely wouldn't care about laws against trespassing. Evil genius Jumba Jookiba goes where he wants! He does not care for pointless Earth regulations! Yes, that's probably something his creator would say to a (most likely intimidated) crew member.
For now, Reuben was content simply to explore. He began by entering one of the buildings. After a couple minutes to about an hour of urban exploration, where he briefly paused to sit in an otherwise unused chair situated next to a desk formerly used by a crew member, he moved on. He even saw a calendar with a 1999 date, the last year this island was open to the public. After several more minutes, he found a functioning radio, it only required power to work. It'd probably come in handy, if he or anyone else planned to use this place. After another hour, he came across a shelf stocked with a variety of bottles and jars. One of the bottles had the body of a snake immersed in liquid. Weird. Though it must've been part of some zoo display.
He was in the middle of examining it when he heard a noise swiftly approaching him from behind. He instantly whipped the beam of light around. "Who's there?" he cried out, trying to stem the anxiety in his voice. His mind raced faster than a supercomputer. There couldn't be any dangerous creatures on this island, that was ridiculous. Sure he'd listened to the creepypasta, but those monsters were totally fictional! Totally Fictional! Then again, weren't the special visitors like himself technically fictional characters but transported here by some unknown means...then...that would mean...No!...No!...there was Nothing to fear on this island!...right?
