Character basics
Character name: General Destin Mattias
Age: 52 years old
Species: Human
Birthplace: Arendelle
Movie: Frozen 2
Custom title: Arendelle's Military General
Why'd you pick this character? I love how devoted he is as a soldier, and how emotive he is xD I tend to like characters that do things I don't expect or are out of the usual norm xD And Sage pointed out that all my characters are tall, so there's that weird thing.
Character appearance (try to get at least 2 or 3 sentences for each section)
Hair description: Destin has streaks of white hair in his black hair atop of his head as well as in his black goatee.
Facial description/mood/expressions: Mattias has a wrinkled forehead with some tiny wrinkles around his large brown eyes. His nose is straight, but comes down to a point. He has a black goatee, which includes a mustache and beard. Overall, Mattias is very expressive. His eyes will tear up if he hears a sad story or if he watches a dramatic scene. Mostly, he'll have a shocked or surprised face at all the newness of things that challenge his beliefs, though he can be very serious as a soldier when he's focused on protecting Arendelle.
Clothing style: Mattias is wearing green Arendellian military uniform in a style much like the traditional Redcoats from England, though it consists of a green military tunic of medium length that starts with a black high collar around his neck fastened by a gold button and ends at the middle of his thighs. The green military tunic is marked by a single row of gold buttons on either side and red leather strips embroidered between the buttons and the seam that is fastened down the middle of his torso with a belt that bears the Arendellian crest strapped around his waist and on top of the tunic. On his shoulders, he wears yellow epaulettes. At the ends of his tunic are embroidered in brown with a Norwegian style of rosemaling, a floral ornamentation common in most Norweigian clothing, which bears a remblance to the Arendellian crest, called the crocus. He also wears off-white pants with dark brown knee high boots atop of his pants.
On formal occasions, he'll wear a white cape with a broach bearing the crocus pinned around his neck.
Body build: Mattias has a muscular build as a trained soldier.
Any unique traits (optional): He carries a sword and shield bearing the Arendellian crocus as the coat of arms. He also always stands with a military stance unless he's on his guard.
Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
Personality:
General Mattias has a great sense of pride in serving Arendelle and maintaining his military lifestyle. Although General Mattias can be an introvert when it comes to admitting his feelings, particularly when it comes to romantic relationships, he cannot hide his emotions at all in his expressions. He'd easily express interest in another person by happiness, shock, and sadness to the point of tearing up in his eyes simply after hearing a sad or touching story.
Once he becomes fond of someone, Mattias can easily attach himself to them and become more opened to them by imparting them with his wisdom that he had learned over the years, such as he did to both Agnarr and his daughter, Anna. He'd even have fun with that person by either inviting them to eat a sweet treat, taking them out around town, playful flirting if appropriate, or sharing his amazement for the new things he's learned. Despite this openness, however, he still demonstrates social awkwardness around the subject of actual romantic displays of affection out in public, even including hand holding gestures or kissing of any sort, as he'd prefer to keep his private life private.
General Mattias has more than 34 years of military experience and is currently out of date with some of the advances in Arendelle as a result of being trapped in a forest. Always eager to improve himself, he is very opened to learning new things. His father's words to being prepared for any new path that life may lead has enabled him to adapt to these changes once he has established them as the current truth. However, Mattias is very headstrong about some of his long-held beliefs, particularly when it interferes with a previous command that he was given by royalty. Unfortunately, Mattias will need a good reason to change them, especially if he hasn't seen it himself or heard it from a reliable source; his sense of duty particularly adhering to anything coming from royalty or from some higher position of power. Anyone he believes to be an enemy will not be adhered to and he will be easily on the defensive, which can lead to misunderstandings. That said, once he is convinced by someone of a reliable source, he has the capacity to be open minded to changes and even easily adapts and embraces some of them, such as when he learned about Elsa having powers or when he learned about photographs.
As someone that is capable of instructing and commanding a group of soldiers in their training, Mattias has a strong sense of conflict resolution in being able to resolve conflicts that should arise in his men through the ranks, which enabled him to easily work on resolving conflicts with the civilians in Arendelle during peacetime with Prince Agnarr. He has an opened minded view to strangers, even thieves, but will meet the thieves with a scrutinizing eye and a clever hand to ensure that they are given what they need the proper way and not the illegal way, though not without ensuring that they will be keeping an eye on them. Thereafter, he will give them this chance to prove themselves, but will be quick to the defensive should they mess up again after keeping an eye on them as he does not particularly like anyone that is against Arendelle, its people, and what it stands for, even if it means one of his own demonstrating traitorous behavior.
Finally, General Mattias has a sworn duty to serve and protect all that is Arendelle at all costs, even at the cost of his life, and he fears failing Arendelle in his mission to accomplish that.
History:
Destin Mattias' loyalty to Arendelle can be derived from being born and raised in Arendelle. Being identified as part of the black community in the kingdom of Arendelle, he was not at all treated terribly, though he was treated as someone that stood out from the rest. In fact, his father, also named Destin, had built a great life for his family when he first worked as a log house construction worker before he settled down to being a grocery store clerk to take care of young Destin after his wife left him because of how often he'd be away from the house, leaving his father with a lesson not to take the good for granted in life. His father dreamed of one day joining the military to help their cause, and began working as a cook in the military, further proving to the rest of the world how great of a man he was, and how impacting a role model he was to young Destin. Unfortunately, his father died before he could be officially recognized with the title as corporal; tragedy struck the family after his father died from a heart attack when young Destin was barely a teenager. Destin recalled that he had lost his dad relatively early in life, but he could swear he was given the best years that a kid could ever have. Though his father died when he was young, one of the most important lessons would always be ingrained forever in young Destin's mind: “Be prepared. Just when you think you found your way, life will throw you onto a new path.”
As soon as his father died, Destin quickly tried to take it upon himself to take up what his father tried to do before he died. Unfortunately, he was unable to take up cooking like his father did due to his lack of skill, except for dishwashing, so Destin began working within a forest as a lumberyard worker until he was old enough to join the military. As soon as he was old enough to join the military army of Arendelle, he began basic training, where he learned how to take up the sword and shield. With a lot of determination, Mattias felt that his father would have been smiling at him on the day that he was honored with the title korporal, just like his father would have been entitled with if he hadn't died. However, Destin was also taught by his father never to take the good for granted in life, so he kept pushing himself until he became a Sersjant (sergant) and began demonstrating his ability to train and lead a group of soldiers until he was promoted to a 2nd lieutenant, or a Fenrik. As a second lieutenant, Destin Mattias began to get his first taste of battle, the first of many that would be the War of Independence for Arendelle. Throughout the years that he faced battle, which lead to dire conditions and mass starvation, Destin Mattias learned how to survive the harsh conditions no matter the weather conditions given his father's lesson to be prepared for anything. His loyalty to put his life on the line for King Runeard in battle instantly promoted him with the title of Løytnant, or lieutenant and the king's personal guard for his son, Prince Agnarr.
During times of peace in Arendelle, Lieutenant Destin Mattias served King Runeard and Queen Rita well as their son's personal guard, accompanying the prince everywhere in the kingdom and teaching him various things, such as how to manage conflicts among citizens fairly and justly by nudging them to the least-worst option; from the smallest conflict being between two vendors that would fight for the best location for selling ice, to greeting newcomers disguised as thieves. With the latter, Lieutenant Mattias taught the young Prince Agnarr to be welcoming and gracious to all kinds of newcomers of Arendelle, yet treat the thieves with a gracious, but clever hand because "they'll leave this evening having been treated graciously, and with at least two naval ships tracking their every move." Of course, there were also plenty of times for fun, such as treating the young prince to a snack from Blodget's Bakery, or playfully flirting with a woman named Halima whenever the prince was occupied with the king.
One day, the king wished to seek information about the Northuldra tribe that lived in a forest within the wilderness outskirts of the kingdom. Leading a recon group through the dangers of the forest, such as wolves, Lieutenant Mattias learned from the leader of Northuldra that elemental spirits dwelled within the forest, making it an enchanted forest shared among the Northuldra. Lieutenant Mattias found entertainment in their culture, enthralled by the magic they used and the racing of reindeer. Upon returning with this information to the king, the King's next decree within a matter of days was to build a dam that would serve as a bridge across the water; a gift to recognize a bond between Arendelle and the Northuldra tribe. As soon as the bridge was completed, the 14 year old Prince Agnarr accompanied his father and Lieutenant Mattias on an expedition to the the Enchanted Forest north of his kingdom, where a celebration was to be held in honor of the unity between Arendelle and the Northuldra tribe.
Suddenly, a war broke out between the Arendellians and the Northuldra during the celebration, where the leader of the Northuldra and King Runeard were suddenly found killed. Lieutenant Mattias was quick to charge into battle to Arendelle's defense against the Northuldran tribe's attack. This caused the normally peaceful spirits to turn against the humans that had brought violence to their land. In the midst of the chaos of battle, Prince Agnarr was knocked unconscious, but was rescued by a mysterious girl and safely returned to Arendelle just before the angered spirits created a massive fog that trapped those that remained of the battle inside the forest, creating an invisible barrier with no way of escaping.
For 34 years, 4 months and 23 days, Lieutenant Mattias found that Life had thrown him once again in a forest, but this time as a soldier and not as a lumberyard worker. As soon as his men were safe from the fire and wind elements that swept the forest, he first mourned for the loss of Prince Agnarr, whom he had grown attached to, before deciding to escape the forest. Throughout the years when he wasn't fighting the Northuldra off in each new location of the forest that they would move to, the Lieutenant attempted to retreat his men many times from various directions in efforts to avoid the elemental magic that was there, especially to further avoid the fire and the stone Earth giants, whom he lost some of his men to out of their desperation to escape rather than listening to his orders. After surveying the Enchanted Forest within various directions, Lieutenant Mattias had unfortunately made the horrifying conclusion that they were actually stuck there! Thankfully, his experience in the forest and the years of surviving dire conditions in the war with the rationing of their limited supplies enabled Lieutenant Mattias to guide his remaining men within the forest, constantly defending themselves against the Northuldran advances and the elemental spirits by their newfound camp close to the bridge.
Then Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, a reindeer, and a surprisingly animated snowman introduced as Olaf ventured into the forest. Of course, having surveyed the area, Lieutenant Mattias had no idea who they were, given that he had never seen the likes of them before. When the Northuldra showed up to attack them first, as he'd always known them to have done since the war started, he ordered his men to bang on their shields to announce their threat to the Northuldra that invaded their territory, though the Lieutenant was also concerned with disarming the woman with the sword in case the newcomers were also a threat. Elsa instantly dissolved the fight with a demonstration of her icy powers, causing confusion amidst the Arendelle guards and the Northuldra. Along with Elsa's powers, their truth about them being royalty from Arendelle allowed the Arendelle guards and the Northuldra to unite in peace for the first time in a little more than thirty years. The fire elemental suddenly broke out in the forest, causing the army to scatter to safety. It was then when Elsa had managed to tame the fire spirit that Lieutenant Mattias truly believed that Elsa had the ability to set them all free, though he was shocked to learn not only that it was a lizard that caused it, but that their former queen mother was also Northuldran.
After spending time catching up on a few things with Anna at the Northuldran camp, the Earth Giants once again roamed the area at night, causing their celebration of peace to be short lived while they were in hiding. As Anna and Elsa went along their mission to set them free, Lieutenant Mattias was armed with a newfound hope for escaping the enchanted forest and patrolled the area around the bridge to continue defending all that Arendelle stands for, which was the bond between the Northuldra and the Arendellians. Gone were nights of guarding against the Northuldra, so he was sleeping easier with only the elementals to worry about.
As they patrolled the land while they waited for Anna and Elsa's return, Lieutenant Mattias encountered the sight of Anna running at the direction of the bridge with the earth giants following closely behind her. Instantly, Lieutnant Mattias called his men to defend the bridge from the Earth Giant element, guarded against Anna for even leading them here on purpose to destroy the bridge, the very thing that Arendelle stood for. Yet Anna declared that Elsa gave her life for the truth, that the bridge needed to be destroyed in order for everyone to be set free, which stirred Lieutenant Mattias to call his men to make noise with their shields in order to draw the attention of the Earth Giants in attempts to destroy the bridge. Soon, the bridge was destroyed, and the water swept over to Arendelle, which was thankfully protected with the help of Elsa's magic. This act pleased the spirits of the Enchanted Forest, and everyone was soon released from their prison within the Enchanted Forest, even for the Northuldrans to once again see the blue skies.
Soon after, Lieutenant Mattias was promoted to General under the newly crowned Queen Anna, only too thrilled to find that Halima was still around to flirt with while he learned about all that he missed out in Arendelle.
