Violet grinned at Tony. She was ecstatic that he had asked her out. And “Mrs. Violet Rydinger” was scribbled all over her diary. It was Friday, and she was at the movies with him. As she had promised, she had bought the popcorn for their date. Tony held the door to the theater open, and Violet preceded him into the dark room.
After the movie, Tony’s mom dropped Violet off at her house. She waved before rushing in the house, feeling a blush creep over her face. She rushed to her room, shut the door, and sank to the ground, a big smile on her face. Tony had kissed her during the credits. She rushed over to her diary, with the intent to fill another page with the day’s excitement. But it wasn’t where she had left it.
Dash.
Angry, Violet wrenched open her bedroom door. ”DASH!” she shouted. He had a habit of stealing her diary. Somehow, he always knew exactly where she put it. Next time, she was hiding it in the top drawer of her dresser. Watch him find it then.
She found him in his bedroom, reading it aloud to himself in a gooey voice. ”’Tony asked me out at Dash’s track finals. We’re going to the movies! Oh, I hope he kisses me!’ Ew! Who’d want to kiss Violet?!” He looked up at her. ”Did he kiss you?” he asked sarcastically, throwing the diary at her. She caught it and put a force field around his door after running through it. She heard him bounce off with a cry. She sped to her room, put a field up just outside her door in case Dash tried to follow, and hid her diary with her socks and underwear. She left. This was actually a good time to practice how far she could maintain a force field.
After dinner, she asked her mom to go enter her bedroom, warning her that there might be a force field there. ”I want to see if it’s still up while I’m on the other end of the house,” she explained. A few minutes later, her mom returned, with good news. At least while she was home, she could protect her room from nosy little brothers.
The following day, she decided to go on a bike ride to the library. She packed her special backpack (she had asked the family friend Edna Mode to make it for her, so it could go invisible too) lightly, just a notebook and a few pencils. She wanted to learn more about Supers and was going to do some research. But it wasn’t the normal scenery. Where was the neighborhood she had lived in for the past three years? Violet turned back to the house. Had some new Super showed up? Transported them to some strange place? But the house wasn’t there.
Violet reached in her pocket to feel the mask she kept there. It was a habit now. It reassured her. She stepped back into the shadows, stripped off her normal clothes, and packed them in the backpack. Wearing her costume, she donned her mask and straightened her headband. She was glad it was black. It matched her costume. She pulled the backpack over her shoulders and turned invisible. The streets were mostly empty, but Vi didn’t want to take any chances. She crept along the building’s edge, trying to figure out where she was.
