Accipiter didn’t want to wake up. The Gryphon had suddenly felt horribly drowsy, so suddenly he had barely managed to land. Besides, it was so peaceful here, with the sound of a waterfall. The weather was warm, true, but since he had spent 7 of his years in snow…yes, Accipiter thought it nice.
The sound of singing made him lift his head. The Gryphon’s sharp ears located the sound…from a well? Accipiter look to his right and froze. There was a human woman, clearly turned into stone.
Accipiter jumped to his feet in terror. “Daughter of Eve!” he cried. There were more: Deer and Rabbits at her side, Dwarves below her. It was odd: all the figures seemed happy, far from the pained expressions of all the marbled.
“I-I’ll find aid!” he screeched (though how, he didn’t know). Accipiter took to the skies, taking care to not strike the frozen Human or Dwarves. Once airborne, he wheeled, desperately scanning for help.
The Gryphon was so shocked he almost forgot about the marbled. Why, this place was packed with Humans! Even Archenland didn’t have this many!
Accipiter flew past a pastel-colored castle. It wasn’t Cair Paravel, but it wasn’t the White Witch’s castle either. That much was reassuring— or at least, it was, until he soared over a poor Man, turned in a bronze-colored statue, holding the paw of one of those new Talking Mice.
“Son of Adam!” he cried, banking to the right.
How strange this land was: hard stone everywhere, but lush greenery in between. Even odder, many of the Humans kept staring at him. It was as though Gryphons were rarer then Men!
Accipiter suddenly found something comforting: a large tree of uncertain species. Accipiter increased his speed until he reached the tree.
The gryphon spread his alulas and landed on a branch, next to a snarling Leopard. “What is this place?” he asked, watching the Humans climb the tree. “Why, those ropes look like spiderwebs. Who placed them there? And that…is that stairs on the tree?”
It was unnerving how quiet the Leopard was. Accipiter looked closer at Leopard and screeched. Despite its coloring, this Leopard was a statue too.
