Well, we like to be in charge of things,” Patch said to Bolt, “and we allow our humans to think that they’re in charge of things. That’s why we call them our pets.”
Bolt grumbled deep down in his throat, more at the pup’s comments than the fact that the pup had apparently not listened to what he said. (That didn’t bother him— not only was this dog a young puppy, but he was used to creatures not listening to reason).
No, it was what the puppy said that bothered him.
Sounded like cat propaganda to him!
The only question was if the pup’s sire had really fallen for such nonsense, or if it was the pup’s misunderstanding.
Either way, Bolt attempted once again. “Cats and cows like to be in charge of things too, does that mean they in charge of dogs? And besides…who decides where you live? Who decides what you eat? Who decides when you sleep? Who decides what your work is? Who makes you wear a collar? Who takes you out on a leash? Who decides when and where you leave? Who decides when (and if) you return? And again, I ask you: who pets who? Pup, it seems to me like the only ones who trick themselves into thinking they’re the boss…is the dogs who have convinced themselves they’re the boss. That’s cat logic— and dog who attempt that get put to sleep,” finished Bolt softly.
“Whoa, you’re getting ahead of yourself, pup. I’m Rinty’s Battalion Thunderbolt I, and my youngest grandpup is Rinty’s Battalion Thunderbolt III
“Besides, er, you scent like those Siberian wolf dogs and a dingo or something. There’s nothing but german shepherds in my line. Why, even my great-great-great-great grandparents were Fritz de la Chasse royal and Betty des Flandres. Ol’ Fritz traces back to the first registered german shepherds, you know. So..no offense but I don’t think we’re related,”

Bolt’s tail wagged furiously. “I was whelped in 2003, and I descend from Fritz de la Chasse royal and Betty des Flandres through their famous son Rin Tin Tin: through his son, Jr., through his son, Rin Tin Tin III, through his son Major, through his son Rumble, through his son Thunderbolt I. Through Thunderbolt III, I also trace to Flame Jr, through his grandaughter Mustang, daughter of Wildfire.”
“And,” here Bolt couldn’t help growling a little, “It's true; I do trace to Seppala Siberians and Australian cattle dogs, but I’m only 2nd in descent from both of those dogs. My maternal grandfather was an Australian cattle dog, while my paternal grandmother was an Australian Cattle Dog/Seppala husky mix. White german shepherds were disqualified from the AKC conformation events in 1968, so my breeder, Chris Walton, was working on the development of the American White Shepherd as its own breed.”
Bolt sighed and shook his coat, scattered milk-white hairs. “I’m not just related… I’m your direct descendant.”
