Ian pondered Phantasm’s second question. He had made the disguise spell work with Barley, but he’d attributed that to needing someone for Colt’s back legs. Could it have worked without Barley?
Instead, Ian brought his mind back to the current magic quandary. ”I’m not sure if I can or not. But I can definitely try!” Moving to stand beside Phantasm, Ian held the staff sideways, so one end was between himself and the dog, and the other between Phantasm and the dog. ”Bestia lingu! We’ll have to see if you can understand him now, too.”
The dog spoke, revealing his name as Cerberus, and asked about Ian’s name, and Phantasm’s. Ian recalled Phantasm’s near-slipup earlier, where she’d started to say her real name, and considered how ironic it would be if her name was Violet, with Cerberus saying she smelled like them. ”Uhh,” he started. ”I call her Phantasm,” he said, leaving it to the bean if she wanted to reveal her real name or not. He doubted she would.
Phantasm held her hands out to form a purple--violet, haha, Ian thought--sphere. She could adjust the size, too, she said. Ian was fascinated. But Cerberus declared it perfect, and asked Ian to throw it. ”Yeah, I definitely can.” He pointed the staff at the sphere. ”Aloft elevar,” he said, watching the sphere rise. He knew from past experience that he could move the sphere and use accelior to throw it quickly. ”Accelior!” he cried next, spinning himself in a circle to launch the sphere out of the alley.
As Cerberus chased it, Ian ran out after him, lagging behind of course. He just wanted to be out of the alley, and shake off the feeling of being trapped. He was dismayed, however, to see the purple sphere wink out of existence, just as magically as it had appeared. "What happened?" he asked Phantasm.
