Dug had no idea where he was. But since no one had yet asked to be his master (it had taken some time for Dug to accept that Genie wasn't the master sort; like Dug, Genie had masters, but was not a master. And anyway, Genie had disappeared, beyond where Dug could track him.) Dug felt free to wander. He knew he had a few places he could sleep if he wanted, or he could sleep outside. He generally didn't mind the latter, unless it was raining. Although the snow was pretty cold.
So, Dug had followed his nose to a place filled with unknown scents. There were lots of tingling scents that reminded Dug of the time he'd gotten into Epsilon's spice rack on the Spirit of Adventure. Dug sneezed.
For most of the scents, Dug followed them from one shop to the next. There was one that made Dug's nose itch in a different way. He licked his nose, trying to figure out this new scent.
He tracked it to a white feather. Oh! A bird! Dug's tail started wagging. He loved tracking birds!
Putting his nose quite close to the feather to pick up a better scent, Dug was startled when the feather moved with his breath, right to his nose.
It stuck.
Dug shook his head, trying to get the feather off. But no amount of shaking would loose the feather. Dug's next step was to try backing up, hoping the feather would stay where it was while he moved away. But that didn't work either.
Dug backed up into a display stand of post cards, knocking it over. Post cards started scattering in the wind, and Dug jumped forward. His ears tucked back, his tail drooped down. He fully expected to be reprimanded for knocking things over.
The golden retriever tucked himself under a nearby cafe table, still occasionally shaking his head at the feather stuck to his nose. He backed up, too, and was cornered by the table's legs. It was lose-lose for the canine.
By now he was so familiar with the scent on the feather, he wasn't sure he could forget it if he wanted to!
((something similar happened to my Dane. a feather fell off my Halloween mask and stuck to her nose. i think she was a bit traumatized by it, but in the moment it was funny to see this giant dog afraid of a feather. Haven't tried it with my pup yet, but I'm pretty sure he would try to eat the feather before he would sniff it))
