I just wanted to explain the backstory of the movie since most people including myself did not know what was happening in Colombia at the time. My mom and dad explained it to me.
In Colombia, there was a period called:
El Desplazamiento (The displacement)
There was a time in Colombia where the mafia wanted to grow their own drug plants
And they paid guerilla people to force the farmers to pay them whatever they farmed or whatever animal they had in their farms in order to continue farming without any problems
If they didn't pay, then the mafia/guerilla people would take over the farms for themselves
So, the government stepped in and decided to send out their military soldiers/police to protect the farmers
Unfortunately, the military soldiers wouldn't do anything, they didn't care or maybe they were paid off by the mafia
That's when the rich people decided to take the situation into their own hands and they would make their own military, which were called paramilitares
The paramilitares would then go to the farmers and say if you want protection from the mafia, you have to pay them a certain amount
Essentially, the farmers were having to pay 3 groups of people: the mafia/guerilla to keep their farm, the government military that barely does anything, and the rich people's paramilitares for protection from the mafia
And if the farmers chose to work for the mafia in efforts to keep their farm and work for them, then the paramilitares would kill the farmers
So, the farmers were in a lose-lose situation because they'd run out of resources to give to all these 3 groups of people JUST to keep their farm
Thus, a lot of them saw no choice but to just leave
The farmers left their fincas (farms) and were forced to migrate to the city, thus they were forcibly displaced from their homes and jobs
In the city, the farmers didn't know how to do anything else except farm, so a lot of them ended up poor and homeless unless they learned a new skill that could give them work in the city
My mom says it's still happening in Colombia today, but it's not as bad as it used to be Anyways, I hope this clears up the confusion regarding the violent situation in the movie Encanto :3
