Ever since the Haunted Mansion incident, Basil had been turning something over in his mind. He had learnt that the bowler-hatted human who had used his fiendish technology to control Basil's brain, albeit temporarily, was in actuality the mere stooge to an amazing hat.
Basil intended to investigate this further, but something else was nagging at his brain, namely, how he had been duped for so long in the first place. Was he growing soft? Losing his abilities from lack of use? The very idea made him shudder. Without his analytical powers, what was he? Useless, that's what.
Heaven knows there was little enough for a detective to do in the parks, and that inactivity just might be causing Basil's skills to run dry, so to speak.
So the detective had made a decision: he would spend considerable time in investigative pursuits, even if there were no crimes to investigate. He would keep himself in fighting form by seeking out information on the various denizens of the parks.
And he chose as his first object Fred. A perfect choice, as they had only met recently and Basil knew almost nothing about him. He began by making a mental list of facts.
"Name: Fred, family name unknown. Occupation: Lord High Keeper of all arcane knowledge, whatever that means, and school mascot." It was a starting point, but none of his enquiries turned up any sort of school anywhere on the property. What else had he observed about Fred? He was slovenly in his dress, yet wore a very expensive suit of clothes to the Christmas Ball. Apparently he had means. He also had some connexion with lizard-like creatures, sporting their likenesses on his shirt, hat, and jewelry, a likeness reminiscent of that lizard-suited fellow who appeared at the Ball.
Basil was hampered by his lack of knowledge concerning this century, but he determined to search the hotels, beginning with the most expensive and working his way down. This led him to the Grand Floridian, where he spent several days in fruitless investigation before moving on to the Contemporary Resort.
