"No one will be hurt, silly child. Save the losers, of course. Arm them!
"Losers are still people" Rapunzel returned with stubborn defiance, folding her arms over her chest. "And, besides-" she faltered, losing steam now, "I-"
She had paused, uncertain, fiddling restlessly with her hands as she struggled for the right words to express her frustration, when Basil intoned under his breath, "Perhaps we might manage a stalemate. Then, no one will be killed."
Rapunzel allowed her voice to fade as the idea set in. She had always been prone to swift reaction-had allowed her life to be dictated by impulse and adrenaline. But here, now, Basil's plan sounded so simple, so perfect. She cast green eyes towards him, half envious, half wry. She could never have thought of it alone
Ordinarily, she would have been frightened, but with Basil at her side, she felt keenly that they could do this. She glanced at him one last time, seeking reassurance in the calm sincerity of his demeanor, then turned to the queen and offered a succinct nod.
She had just accepted the scepter, looking it over with reluctant curiosity and twirling it in her hands, when Toby came bounding back. Rapunzel couldn't suppress the smile that sparked in her eyes, even as she felt a sharp pang in her chest; he was so devoted, and the softness in his eyes reminded her of Max.
Luckily, her reverie was interrupted by the queen's booming voice, "Let the match begin!"
Instinctively, Rapunzel leaped backward as a pawn moved forward.
It's alright, she soothed herself, anxiously braiding a strand of golden hair, Juuuuust a pawn-gotta think. Gotta...strategize.
Vaguely, she acknowledged a gruff complaint from Basil, but it wasn't until he addressed her that she offered him her undivided attention.
"I believe it falls to you as queen to direct the other pieces. Are you familiar with the game at all?"
At this, Rapunzel blanched. "Well-well, yeah" she conceded hesitantly, "In my tower-alone..with myself. But-I haven't ever played like this before. I...don't know if I can."
