Today, Alice Kingsleigh took a day's stroll by the infamous Gold Rush mountain. She had heard tales of the Gold Rush when she lived in Oxford. With such scarce gold, only a lucky fellow would earn that miracle of discovering something so precious. They called this place the 'Big Thunder Mountain'. The name hinted its supposed terrifying creatures that lurked inside... But from the outside, Alice found nothing frightening about the mountain at all!
It seemed Alice Kingsleigh would be stuck at nineteen forever. She had been in her adult body for three weeks, but nothing changed! She never shrunk by eight inches, she never saw her old clothes re-appear. She was still wearing the same dress she had been wearing since that morning in the rice fields.
Even after a few weeks, Alice had not completely assimilated into adult life. Strangers treated her differently; they regarded her as a young fair lady rather than a nuisance of a child. While she did appreciate their manners and conduct, there were the men who had tried to woo her. A young lad had suavely approached her with a red, red rose, asking her to dinner. But, Alice Kingsleigh had to decline! The naturally twelve-year-old child knew nothing about courtship or romantic ideals... it was all a misty fog to her -- !
Indeed, her head had long been high in the clouds, for she had absentmindedly fallen into a deep, deep DITCH! "WHOA-OH!" Was the nearly-adult Alice was falling to her death? She was screaming and screaming with fright as she was pulled down toward the center! Her voice was loud enough to echo all the way up to the above land!
Thud! Splash! She fell into an underground pool of some sort. It was fairly shallow, but deep enough to save Alice from falling to her death! She quickly gathered herself and rushed out of the pool. There was hardly any light to help her walk out of the filthy pool, she would just have to grope her way around.
Finally, a source of some light led on land near by! Quickly, Alice rushed to toward the beaming light. Walking in water was such a drag; it made her skirt so heavy. A few times she tripped on it while walking. She began kicking her feet to dry them off the minute she began walking on the ground dirt. She began to squeeze out the water her dress had collected. Then Alice touched her face.. and paused. Her face felt different.. it wasn't the slim face she held when she was on land. She seemed chubbier, more round. She looked up at the ceiling (which was all rock, of course, for she was inside Thunder Mountain now), but it seemed so high up for her! "Well, curiouser and curiouser!' she cried with disbelief. "I couldn't have shrunk, I haven't any mushrooms with me!"
Another shock! Her voice grew squeakier and pitchy... "Am.. am I really.. twelve again?" She touched her face again. She didn't have a mirror with her at this moment, but her new appearance was not the child's only concern. How was she going to climb out of Thunder Mountain?
