Jim's idea of where and when he was stuck twisted around in his mind as he wandered aimlessly. So far he'd managed to stumble through some place full of animals, get kicked out, escape that weird hurricane quarantine, and now he was surrounded by all kinds of confusion. There were signs everywhere talking about space and the future. Reading some of them, Jim became completely convinced: he was time-traveling and got stuck in the past somehow. They didn't know about any galaxy besides their own, which he'd never heard of, and it was some kind of question for them whether or not life existed on other planets. Well, duh, he wanted to tell them, I'm from one of them! However, he hadn't yet worked up the interest to ask someone. Jim was a proud kid, he didn't like being confused, but he didn't like asking for help either. He'd rather work it all out on his own.
"Mommy, mommy, look! Look, it's Jim! Over there!"
Jim turned at the sound of his name, wondering where it had come from, and saw a little girl with brown pigtails running at him, full-speed, dragging her mother behind her. He took a step back, completely disoriented. How does she know me? I've never been to this world before, it's gotta be way out from Montressor, if it's even in the same dimension...
The little girl didn't even stop, she just hugged him around the waist as hard as she could. "Hey!" he said, somewhat caught off-guard. "Kid, get off me, I don't even know you-"
She looked up, a mystified expression on her face. "But I know you!" she stated, as if it was completely obvious and he was dumb for missing it. "You're Jim Hawkins!" When he looked up, the girl's mother was staring too, and she looked as confused as he did.
"Look," he told the girl. "I don't know how you know me, and I don't want to know. Just get off me and leave me alone, will ya?"
He hadn't even stopped speaking and she was already in tears.
Great. Just great.
