Kind of an interesting story, really. Virtual Magic Kingdom was a free-to-play online game. Beta Testing was opened publicly on May 23, 2005, but was opened up on June 27th.
The game was pretty much a virtual representation of the various Disney Parks(Disneyland and Walt Disney World mostly, mainly focusing on the Magic Kingdom Park). The game was initially launched as an attachment to the Disneyland 50th Birthday Celebration and was not intended as a 'long-term game', but it gained popularity and became a long-term venture on it's own.
Now, when I say it's a virtual representation of the various parks, that also includes the parks opening and closing. The game will open when the parks open, and it will close down when the parks close down for the night.
They also had various things where you actually had to go to the parks and do various things there in order to gain various items. Such as: Go on an attraction, buy something in a shop(Such as a pin), answer a few questions on a piece of paper thingy, or book a trip over to Disneyland in California. VMK also had it's fair share of Mini-Games(A Fireworks Game, where you had to click on the fireworks with the right firework symbol for example. Or perhaps, Pirates of the Caribbean, where you and a few players would team up against AI's or other players. And then, you've got the Jungle Cruise Game, where you had to take photo's of the animals when they appeared on-screen) and it also had various pins and magic pins that you could collect either in-game or at the parks.
But alas, on April 7th 2008, Disney announced that the game was closing down permanently, devastating many of the players. Players attempted to create Online petitions, and some even attempted to arrange a protest outside of Disneyland. However, it was to no avail. In the end, the game was shut down on May 21st, 2008.
So, I am posting this now to see if there are others here that have played it, or heard of it. For those who read the 'Kingdom Keepers' books, you might have spotted a refrence of VMK in there? I don't know, I've never read the books..
Here is a Wiki Artical of the game, if you are curious.
