Rapunzel rolled over in bed, yawning—and sucked in a mouthful of hair. Strange… her hair wasn’t long enough to breathe in anymore. She sat up, pulling the hair from her mouth. She opened her eyes and stared in shock at the blond strands that were coming from her head. Impossible! Eugene had cut it, it was short and brown. She looked around the room she was in. No, this wasn’t possible either. She was back in her tower. Had it all been a dream? The lights, her parents, Eugene…? No, she didn’t think it was a dream. It had been too real.
Slowly, she got up and left her room. ”Hello?” No answer. Pascal squeaked from behind her. She ran back to the bed. ”Pascal, I had the craziest dream! I left the tower with a man named Flynn Rider. Well actually his name is Eugene Fitzherbert. But he took me to see the floating lights, the lanterns, and…” She trailed off as she noticed Pascal was shaking his head at her. He crossed the bed to her night table and pointed at the drawer with his tail.
She opened the drawer. Inside was the purple cloth with the golden sun, just like the one from her dream. ”It was… real? But my hair! And I know I fell asleep in the castle, with Eugene, and mom, and dad… What’s going on?” She picked Pascal up and fled the room, skipping down the stairs to the window. She threw it open. Outside wasn’t the clearing she had stared across over the last 18 years. It was a city, like the one around her parents’ castle. Pascal scuttled down her arm to the sill from his place on her shoulder. He paced back and forth excitedly and pointed with his tail, as if saying, let’s go explore!
She went to the kitchen. She tucked the purple cloth in the waistline of her skirt and grabbed Mother Gothel’s basket, filling it with food. Fruits, bread, everything she could. She didn’t know when she would be back, if ever, so she grabbed her hairbrush from her bedroom too. She needed to find Eugene, find out what had happened, and get back home to her parents. Hooking the basket on her elbow, she went back to the window. Pascal climbed into the basket.
Biting her lip, she took a deep breath. Looping her hair around the hook outside the window, she lowered herself to the ground.
