Rapunzel sat up in the large tree in the middle of the island.
She sighed. She had made a few friends since waking up in this strange world, but she missed Eugene. She remembered how they had met and giggled. Pascal, dozing in her lap, looked up at her. She smiled down at him before returning her gaze to the crowds. The best way to spot Eugene, if he was there, would be from above.
She did a double-take. There was someone who looked remarkable like Eugene, but with different clothes on. Well that didn’t mean much, right? She had changed clothes for Halloween, after all. Excitedly, she snatched up her basket and slid down her hair to the ground. She ran to catch up to the man. ”Eugene!” she cried, jumping at him.
The man yelped in surprise. ”Get off me!” he shouted.
Startled, Rapunzel let go. It wasn’t Eugene. ”Oh. I’m sorry. I… I thought you were someone else,” Rapunzel said sadly. The man grumbled at her as she turned and returned to the tree. Pascal was sitting up on the branch where she had accidentally left him. She threw some hair up, looping it around a branch. He tied it around himself, and she lowered him down to her. ”Sorry about that, Pascal. I thought I saw Eugene.” Pascal nodded in understanding and climbed up to sit on her shoulder.
She let her hair trail along behind her as she walked away from the tree. No use sitting there watching, if she didn’t know if Eugene was even there, right? She realized her mistake when she couldn’t walk forward any more. Someone had stepped on her hair. Frustrated, she turned to try to backtrack and gather it up again, but the crowd pushed against her. She couldn’t move forward, she couldn’t move backwards. She was stuck.
