Mia awoke in her bed, ready to face her first full day as Genovia's queen. She was nervous, excited, anxious... She felt like a big ball of emotions was crushing her chest. But she knew that Grandma was going to be waiting for her.
Everyone was going to be waiting for her.
She pretended to still be asleep when she heard footsteps in the hall. She heard one of her lady’s maids—Brigitte, she thought—open the door. Probably just seeing if she was awake yet. She wouldn’t be able to feign sleep much longer. Grandma would be in soon to wake her.
Once Brigitte left, Mia opened her eyes again. She let out a deep sigh, trying to push off the weight of the day’s emotions.
Fat Louie jumped up on the bed and stared at her. She sat up, leaning her elbows on her knees. He was probably after more food. She’d started restricting his diet, in the hopes of dropping the first part of his name. She may be a queen, but she still had “normal” responsibilities. “No,” she told her cat quietly.
Throwing back the covers, Mia decided it was time to get up.
Strangely, Brigitte and Brigitta didn’t immediately enter. It had always been as if they spied on her, knowing exactly when to enter her bedroom to help her start her day. But not today.
She knew she should don a queenly gown, but she really wasn’t feeling it today. The schedule wasn’t too demanding. She believed her morning was clear... She could probably get away with dressing down, at least for a time...
No, she changed her mind again. She crossed her suite to the massive closet filled with gowns innumerable. Now, which to choose? She was personally a fan of the strapless gowns...
Changing into her gown without help from her lady’s maids was more difficult than she’d originally anticipated, but she managed. Her first order of business was to find out why her lady’s maids hadn’t attended to her. She wasn’t concerned about negligence or anything like that. It was just very unlike the two women to leave Mia alone for this long.
Queen Clarisse had rarely worn her crown around the castle, but that didn’t stop Mia from choosing a subtle tiara. She liked wearing them. Besides, she had such a collection that she could wear a different one each day for a month, and still not wear all of them.
She also felt that the tiara added a bit more authority to her figure. Maybe that was just in her head.
Mia crossed back to her bedroom door, opening the double doors slowly to ensure she didn’t hit anyone who might be waiting on the other side. It had happened before, after all. But there was no one in the hall. No guards, no lady’s maids... no one.
As if reading her mind—something Louie seemed to do often—her cat ran up to stand next to her. Frowning a little at the unusual lack of people, Mia picked up her cat. He was someone from home, and always a source of comfort for the newly-crowned queen.
With Louie in her arms, Mia fully exited the bedroom, not bothering to pull the doors closed behind her. She wasn’t even concerned about getting Louie’s fur on her gown, something she knew her grandmother would probably frown about. ”Brigitte? Brigitta?” she called into the hall. Her voice echoed back at her, sounding a little ominous.
As she looked closer at the walls, she realized that the décor was unfamiliar. She had passed by the same paintings repeatedly in the last month alone, and yet she didn’t recognize any of the people on the walls. There was a balding man with white hair going around the back of his head and a bushy mustache. A young man dressed much like Andrew had been at their almost-wedding stood next to a blonde woman dressed in blue. But none of the faces were familiar. What was going on?
Louie squirmed out of her arms and took off running. Mia wasn’t worried; she knew her cat would find his way back to her eventually... She paused to tuck her hair behind one ear. Uncertainty was taking over the other emotions, and Mia wondered what Clarisse would do in her situation. ”Probably find out what’s going on,” Mia muttered to herself. Still, it was her first time on her own like this. She certainly felt alone. ”Hello?” she said, listening to the echo again. Only this time, she got an answer...
