Mia’s outburst—definitely not unnoticed—embarrassed her. She should be better than that, and she knew it.
Unexpectedly, Shere Khan was understanding about the outburst. Moana put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. And Mia was feeling a little better. These were two people (was that the right word, when one was a tiger?) who were in the same relative position as she was. Yanked from home, dropped in this place without warning...
She wasn’t entirely sure what Shere Khan meant, about him being the “best option”, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to know. Were there worse things than talking tigers in business suits? Maybe regular tigers that didn’t talk or wear business suits? How likely were tigers to attack a human who didn’t bother them? Mia was smart enough to not go near a tiger. A non-talking tiger, at least.
Hey, Shere Khan had come up to her.
Moana repeated that it was a bit of a walk to see the queen, but Mia figured that meant there would be more time for talking.
Moana’s next question to Shere Khan startled Mia. A demigod? But, gods weren’t real! Moana’s earlier comment about being “from the past” echoed in Mia’s mind, and she did a little recalculating. She had no idea of when people widely believed what theologies, but a Hawaiian in 1958 was preparing to become an American citizen, right? Moana had to be from farther back. Maybe 1918. She didn’t know what was going on with Hawaii then...
And speaking of “from the past”... Mia was missing ten years.
”Wait,” she said softly. ”If I’m missing 10 years... Wouldn’t I be 31 now?!” She felt a bit of panic at the idea of being 31, but only having 21 years of experience to draw on. That wasn’t how things were supposed to work!
