Character appearance (try to get at least 2 or 3 sentences for each section)
Hair description: Coco's hair has gone all white by her last days, and even now as a skeleton in the Land of the Dead, though she's always kept it plaited in two pigtail braids. She went from her Mama always doing her braids first thing in the morning (and vague memories of her Papa doing such also, though not as well) to doing her own hair, to her daughter Elena and now back to keeping them tidy herself, though she'd not below letting either Mama or Papa help just for nostalgia's sake.
Facial description/mood/expressions: A rounded face, now with purple skull markings, Coco has always rounded it even more, and been described as smiling, even when she had little reason to. She's gone through many moments of doubtful worry in her life (even just the day to day as a young and then not young mother) but retains a smile almost to fight against it. Whether smiling lovingly at her family, sweetly at the kids, both grand and great-grand, or in half cognition of what goes on around her.
Clothing style: There's a rumor she inspired Rosa's pink choice in her headband, since that's what Coco has mostly been seen in in the same way as her braids. While she would love to take the credit, she prefers to think her great-grand kids make their own choices. She has always worn some form of pink, though, from her dresses back in youth, to even splashes of it throughout her life (she had pink carnations in the band of her wedding dress), and her pink shawl when a grandmother slowly becoming more and more dependent on her wheelchair. The same shawl she kept in the Land of the Dead. Sandals have replaced her last days house-slippers and she also kept her white dress beneath.
Body build: While not overweight per-say, but not skinny, Coco does have a rounded figure to match her founded face, though now with the ability at sanding straighter once more it's straightened out a bit more.
Any unique traits (optional): None
Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
Personality:
Sunny and upbeat, Coco has always chosen to see the bright side, and better side, of life. Even when she herself was annoyed at things like her mother's no music rule, she never all out told her every reason against it, and went along, dutiful and helpful, understanding her mother needed her and with Papa gone, whatever the reason. Loyal and Trusting, she possessed a firm faith it wasn't what Mama said and abandonment, something must have just happened, and remained stubborn on this point. Yet dark doubts did linger, much as she would push them away.
Despite her firm faith, it did leave her with a small Neediness and need of feeling protected and loved, something her mother provided, but Julio cemented, quickly working past the young girl's hesitancy that all stories would end like her Mama's. It had always been evident that when and what Coco gave, she gave with her whole heart, with her uncles and mother, but with Julio and later her daughters it really showed in her kind, caring manner that would kiss away scrapes her daughters received or just Julio's forehead when he fell asleep with the newspaper in his lap.
Steady, and with a steady hand, Coco never truly complained of working in the shop and had a good eye and hand for etching the leather, something carried over from her natural talent at dancing, though she wasn't fully aware of it.
History:
Born in 1918, Coco would be one of the first to say she had a blessed childhood, even with the hardships; and of course the first three years were bliss. Mama and Papa were both happy and showered affection her way and sang and danced all but nightly. Sure Papa's job required him to travel with Tío Ernesto a lot, and she missed him, but Mama and he always promised it wouldn't be long. Then one night she heard them whispering seriously (and Mama raising her voice a few times) about something that Papa soon enough admitted to. He and Tío Ernesto were going on a very long trip. But he promised to write, and sing the song he wrote for her every night. Which he did. Coco often bothered Mama with if his next letter had come yet, and then bothered her to sit down so she could tell her what she wanted to write back! And she kept up the other end of her deal and sang his special song to herself every night, sometimes with Mama.
Then Mama looked more and more concerned; then bothered. Finally angry. She didn't help Coco sing Papa's special song, and in fact Coco started to whisper it softly to herself every night, afraid to upset her Mama if she heard her. Papa's letters had stopped, and Tío Ernesto didn't come around either, to say why or anything. At first Coco was just worried, and sad. But as she grew older she understood more and more what Mama feared.
She didn't believe it, even if she couldn't account for why he would have just not come back. Her actual tíos came by to help Mama start up a shoe-shop to make money.
All of the years were hard, but starting school was the first hurtle. She told Mama she'd walk herself, so Mama didn't also have to get upset seeing all the fathers dropping their kids off; and the other kids talked about why she didn't have a Papa anymore. Stuff got from listening to their parents, which didn't help.
As she grew, Coco had more and more of a hand in helping in the shoe-shop, learning how to make them and finding her skill in etching boots, but it wasn't enjoyable the way it would have been if music was allowed, though she'd already brought that up and Mama was firm on the point.
Even as she neared her Quince, and foolish as she felt some days, Coco would whisper Papa's song to her. Not...every night, and she felt bad, but she was really afraid of what Mama would say if she caught her now! Past the years when she could blame it on childish naivete and she was supposed to have "moved on/accepted".
The son of a local upholster, Julio, tried to grab her attention at her Quince (which was different than everyone else's with no music! And Fifteen was bad age to be different!) but whether due to her shyness, or Mama intervening, he wasn't able to say much. She ran into him the next day, or he found her by Mariachi Plaza listening to the music, and twirling, as she also allowed herself every now and again. At first she begged him not to tell her mother, which he promised, but then surprised her by asking her to dance!
She foolishly told herself at first she'd found a friend to share it with, and was elated enough at that, but by the end of that first dance even she had two reasons to meet up with him; dancing and...she liked him. A lot! It was clear he felt the same and Coco was elated and as sneaky as any teen should be when sneaking out to meet him! She remembered a few stories, Mama hadn't been all that different!
Of course her grandparents hadn't had a sneaky cat! Or maybe they had. Mama's, Pepita, found her out one day! Coco was not vindictive, but she did not give the cat a treat that night! Thankfully Julio was very good at leather work, and was allowed to come around the shop, though he was quickly informed of the No Music rule. Not being able to dance with him at their later wedding was so disheartening! Though...in one secret, only they two ever knew about, they snuck one in later that night and as even in a normal, newly wed chat, the family naturally was inclined not to check on them. Coco locked Pepita in the kitchen also.
Being a wife gave Coco even more of a clear picture of how she had to at least try to be more responsible and dutiful, and put dancing and music behind her, even more so when their daughters were born. She did of course, it really taking home when she injured herself once twirling out front of the house, and worried Elena and Victoria needlessly, Still, Coco held on to her faith that her Papa hadn't truly left, and music wasn't to blame, even as Elena took after her grandmother and set her own kids to the rule when she grew up and after they lost Mama.
If old age had one perk, Coco's own responsibilities in the shop lessened and she was able to spend more time just sitting out back with Julio (when he could be spared too) reminiscing and sharing. The day he fell ill put a damper on this, but they sat out back one last time and she was even able to get one last secret dance out of him before he fully became bed-ridden and slowly passed.
Even sitting out back alone, Coco talked to him constantly and as her mind clouded more and more. She was still there enough to see her great-grandkids come along, though she would slip up and slip in Julio's name long before she mistakenly called Miguel by his name. It wasn't all her memory failing, she just couldn't really accept that he had truly left either.
As she got more wheelchair bound and dependent on Elena's care, her memory started to go too, but she recalled some of Miguel's sweet stories he would ramble to her and the twins running by or Abel and Rosa showing off something they had done. She almost came fully out of her stupor once when Miguel found an old, almost lost half of a picture (forgotten by her just folded behind Mama's for years) but it was short lived and unfortunately only enough to give him a false sense.
She thankfully wasn't aware of his running away, though right as she later really felt herself not able to recall much of anything, a familiar song she had long since ceased singing, came drifting through, along with blessed blessed memories! Not just of her early childhood. Of course as a mother, after cupping Miguel's cheek to say what she couldn't properly express, she had to check up on Elena, who was crying; and share the stories and letters she saved.
With her memories back and able to fully enjoy her last moments with all the family, Coco would say she had a wonderfully peaceful few months up until her parting and...joy of joys! Mama and Papa fully reunited was such an unexpected gift when she crossed over! And Papa's Besitos! Coco hadn't been around long enough to see her latest great-grandchild, Luisa's girl, come, but saw her next year when they all visited, and was so touched the darling girl was named for her!
Ambitions:
Keep her family together here.
Find some way to just know that Julio and Victoria and the others aren't too worried.
Explore this magical place
Enjoy her time with her Papa again.
Enjoy finally being fully able to take in all Miguel and Rosa are doing and share.
Listen to and encourage both of their playing.
Hug everyone amble amounts of times.
Strengths & abilities:
Optimism: Coco's held to good thoughts on her Papa for as long as she could and despite her Mama's very valid reasons for losing her faith.
Cheerful: sort of the same as top, but also Coco just wants to make sure everyone else around her is doing well as well
Dancing: she couldn't show it for a long time, but she both enjoys, and is very good (as near as untrained can go) at dancing.
Caring: Coco was meant to be a mother and grandmother and just dotes on Julio and the kids (and any kids!) alike.
Etching: Shoe Shop wise, her skill mostly lies in being able to do very intricate patterns on the leather of boots and such. She may not enjoy it as much as dancing, but it gives her a sense of pride.
Memory: Even when it looked like a weakness, she held on to three years of memory for her father for 98 years!
Flaws:
Naive: While it flip side provided faith in her father, Coco will chose to believe the best out of everyone, even to harm to herself. She should have stopped asking about her Papa long before she did, and caused grief to both her and Mama through it.
Weak: Be it from youth or later old age, even in her prime, Coco wasn't made for heavy lifting and often had to ask the assistance of her uncles or others in the shop or elsewhere. Even with some of her strength back in the Land of the Dead it's the same, though asking Julio to carry a box is half bonding.
Stubborn: Though she utilizes it differently than her mother, Coco is just as stubborn (and was) in her beliefs on Hector and that Dancing and Music are not bad! She ultimately gave in for the sake of the family, and once having a husband and children of her own to consider. but was right there to check up every time Mama had private conversations with Julio during their courting.
Memory: for the longest time it, and Alzheimer's, was her greatest weakness that she slowly forgot more and more, pulling her away from the family she had and threatening to make her lose her father forever.
