Who am I? Just a conscience!
Introduce yourself
Hey, howdy, hey! The name's EbonyPatriot, and I wished upon a star from Whatsits Galore many moons ago (possibly linked from the old Disney Ever Notice Site?) My other imaginary friends include Ronno and Bolt. Accipiter and I are so very eager to join the Worlds of Disney circle of life!
Character basics
Character name: Accipiter
Age: 8 years old.
Species: Gryphon, (No real scientific name, so howzabout “ Aquilleo rexpraesidio”)
Birthplace: Stormness Head, Southern Mountains of Narnia
Movie: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Custom title: Gryphon Scout
Why'd you pick this character? I love the Narnia books, enjoyed the Disney adaptions, was sad when Disney discontinued the series (though considering the blunders they made with Prince Caspian, it was probably for the best ), and decided I wanted a Narnian for my 3rd character.
I thought of using the Fox, but physically he’d be similar to Bolt— a rather small canid— with a confident personality not too different from Bolt and Ronno, so the situations for him wouldn’t be too different. I’ve always loved griffins thanks to Quest for Camelot, so the Gryphon Scout was a definite! I loved him in the movie.
Character appearance (try to get at least 2 or 3 sentences for each section)
Hair description: From head to ribs, Accipiter is covered in silky and soft cinnamon-color down feathers, which give way to his cocoa-colored contour feathers on his shoulders. The downy feathers grow shaggy, making him look scruffy and keeping him warm. An ice-white patch of feathers grows from the angle of his jaws to his xiphoid process. More white feathers cape the caudal side of his forelegs from scapulas to wrist. From ribs to tail, Accipiter is covered in the sleek and smooth coat of a dull fawn-colored lion, with white fur on the plantar side of his back paws. Accipiter’s flight feathers are a banded bronze, patched with pale beige on his primaries.
Facial description/mood/expressions: The bony occipital ridges over his amber eyes give Accipiter a permanently fierce expression. Yet a closer look reveals his nervous and uncertain personality. Even though he has a furry chin, Accipiter has the tough, keratin covered yellow beak and “lips” of an eagle, with a black-tipped hook. His odd shaped, heavily tufted ears constantly move, picking up every noise.
Clothing style: Like most of the Talking Beasts, Accipiter refuses armor or clothes: he feels strongly that if his talons, beak and claws aren’t enough to protect his hide, it isn’t worth keeping.
Body build: A gryphon combines strength and speed, and Accipiter is no exception. Accipiter’s cinnamon colored sternomastoideus are very prominent, making him look even fiercer. The Gryphon wings grow on top of his main scapulas, leaving both shoulders looking muscular. However, his body is lean and agile, capable of aerial maneuvers.
Any unique traits (optional):
The white ‘bib’ of feathers under his jaws is very wide and noticeable.
The retices (tail feathers) grow golden instead of bronze.
Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
Personality:
Accipiter loves the freedom of flight and the True Kings of Narnia. Befitting his eagle and lion halves, Accipiter is noble and kind to the helpless, fierce and aggressive to the strong. Accipiter is anxious and nervous: he’s inexperienced (barely an adult) and he knows it. Yet his loyalty to the Great Lion conquers all fear!
History:
Accipiter was born in the Hundred Year Winter, close to the mountain pass of Archenland. Largely because of their leonine characteristics, gryphons were not popular in the false queen’s reign. The gryphons however, could not be cowed: they were fiercely loyal to the true king. Accipiter’s sire, Caelum, and his dame, Aetos, raised their young close to Archenland, the only place where the line of King Frank and Queen Helen ran unbroken.
Accipiter was the oldest of a litter of four: his sisters, Bufera and Nychi, and his brother Voreios, were all raised to respect the Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve, to love the Great Lion. Caelum and Aetos volunteered to frozen supplies from unenchanted Archenland (and occasionally, Tashbaan) to the frozen Narnia. Though they struggled to keep their cublets out of it, once all fledged, they too became runners and scouts. Accipiter, because of his speed and agility on the wing, made the best scout.
Tragedy soon struck when Jadis captured his parents and turned them into stone. The thought of his parents, doomed to suffer in frozen pain until they eroded: it was almost enough to break the whole litter. It was Accipiter who rallied his family, vowing to not surrender until spring returned. Accipiter’s quiet faith remained strong, even when the witch captured and marbled his love Kalokairi, daughter of Aestas and his mate Zarkadi.
It was Vulpo, the red fox, who brought word of the two Daughters of Eve and two Sons of Adam. Accipiter rallied his family and cast (hunting team), and joined the good fight. A Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus, had originally volunteered to scout for Peter; however, Haliaeetus agreed that the more experienced Gryphon was the better option. It was Accipiter who was able to observe and repot the numbers.
Accipiter and his cast fought valiantly, using the aerial bombing the clever Sons of Adam suggested: Nychi was stuck with an arrow. Bufera then fell in the battle against the harpies. In desperation, Accipiter and Voreios dive-bombed Jadis. Voreios’s wing was torn and crippled, while Accipiter was turned to stone and shattered.
Accipiter thought he was done for, especially when he hit the ground. However, in what seemed like seconds, Aslan’s breath revived him. When the Gryphon, his sisters and brother (all of whom had been healed thanks to the cordial), embraced him. There was more good news: Aslan had revived his parents— and Kalokairi.
Accipiter and his cast became the aerial guard of Cair Paravel. After a year of battling the remnants, Accipiter thought at last he could settle down with Kalokairi: his siblings had all found mates, and even his parents had produced a second clutch.
That is until he found himself in the strange world of Walt Disney World...
Ambitions:
To serve the true kings and queens of Narnia!
To settle down with Kalokairi, to be the best mate and sire he can.
To keep his family and country save from harm.
To live up to his new role as marshal of the new Narnian Air Force, leading the Talking Birds and Gryphons.
Strengths & abilities:
Like all Gryphons, Accipiter is fast and strong, able to soar a few miles up and race on the ground, with a razor sharp bill, eight killing talons on his front feet, and eight retractable claws on his back feet.
Accipiter, in particular, is excellent at scouting ahead, spying and correctly determined number and position.
Even when he’s nervous and fearful, Accipiter is able to throw himself into his task, acting so courageously few suspect his reluctance.
Like Trumpkin the dwarf will be centuries later, Accipiter knows the difference between giving advice and following orders.
Flaws:
Accipiter is nervous and unsure; it’s much easier to be brave when you’re not in a real war!
Despite this, Accipiter is reckless, prone to taking dangerous risks and impulsive decisions.
Accipiter also has trouble knowing when to hold his tongue and when not to speak (or screech).
Accipiter must always remind himself to not be a hoarder (like all Gryphons, he loves gold) and that war is no excuse to let his own morals slide, even if it ends the battle faster.
Likes:
The sun and spring: for so much of his life, he lived in winter.
Fish and ungulates (though never ever a Talking Beast).
Flying through the air, especially with his family.
Dozing in the sunlight and ‘wind-drinking.’
Dislikes:
Ice and snow— though its the Gryphon’s mountain-dwelling environment, he feel he’s seen enough for a lifetime!
Accipiter struggles to fight his bias against canids and cyclops: the former because of the wolves who were Jadis's secret police (not all wolves, as he constantly reminds himself) and the latter due the ancient rivalry Gryphons have with the Arimaspi.
Rain and especially storms, which make it tough for him to fly.
Having to eat plants, especially grapes (like many birds, he finds it bitter).
Fears:
The return of the witch— they say that more of her kind lurk in the North….
Getting turned into stone again.
Anything happening to family or squadron.
Loosing the ability to fly, especially while airborne.
Anything to add?:
Like all Gryphons, Accipiter holds himself to the high standards of both Eagles and Lions.
I haven’t been able to get access to the junior novelization, however the Film Companion, script, Visual Commentary on the Expanded DVD, and even the Narnian wikia all have him called just "Gryphon Scout." Poor guy!
