Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
Personality:
Nakoma is very caring, responsible, and serious. She does her part in providing for the Powhatan Tribe with many other young women her age, and she’s always been there for Pocahontas, her best friend, as if she were the chief’s daughter’s big sister ever since the two were little girls and the free-spirited Native American’s mother died. When Nakoma sees that Pocahontas is doing something that is believed to disrespect or put their people in danger, such as running off to secretly see an Englishman (John Smith), she will try to stop her or talk her out of it, or she will go to a fellow member of the tribe and tell them what is happening when all that fails.
She knows when to have moments of fun, but she doesn’t stray too far away from her responsibilities in the village. When she does have her moments of fun, she plays around with Pocahontas in the river, in the snow, and on the earth. Even though she believes that there are games that she and Pocahontas are a little too old for, she still joins in with her best friend.
She can also be very untrusting of people who come to her tribe’s land from another land, for they look different, act different, and live different from her and her people, leading her to believe that those different people came to kill them and take their land. She first felt this way about different people when she heard about and saw English settlers with guns and the intention to claim her tribe’s land and dig it up for gold. Because of this, she doesn’t even trust Pocahontas heading off with John Smith. However, after seeing Pocahontas save John Smith from execution and the English settlers (except Governor Ratcliffe) make the choice to not fight in war when they saw the Englishman being released by order of Chief Powhatan, she has a change of heart towards people who are different from her and her people.
History:
Nakoma was born and raised in the Powhatan Tribe in Virginia. As she was growing up, she was shown and told by her mother how all the girls in the tribe lived their lives and all the tasks that they did to survive and support their people. She was allowed to have fun with other children her age each day when she was finished with all her daily tasks. One of the other children she spent time with was Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan. Ever since Nakoma and Pocahontas first met as little girls, they have spent even more time with each other, and not just in having fun; they also worked together, talked to each other about what was going on in their lives, and looked after each other, with Nakoma doing so a lot more for Pocahontas than Pocahontas did for Nakoma due to the chief’s daughter being the free-spirited one and the other Native American girl being the more mature one. They were so close to each other that they became best friends, and they eventually got even closer together when Pocahontas’s mother died.
When Nakoma became a young woman, she lived on her own after her mother died, and she worked with many of the other young women her age to provide for herself and her people. Whenever she had the time, she would spend it with Pocahontas, whether she would play childishly, take walks, or simply have conversations with her. As she knew that her best friend had the latter’s mother’s spirit, it didn’t come to her as a surprise that her best friend would run off and do things like thinking about her dreams and trying to figure them out. However, when the English settlers landed on Virginia, and Nakoma heard about them, she believed that running off wouldn’t be a good idea for her best friend to be doing.
Ever since the English settlers arrived and Pocahontas met one of them (John Smith), Nakoma suspected that her best friend had been keeping a secret from her, and she saw that the secret in question was that her best friend had been seeing that English settler. She was even made by Pocahontas to keep quiet about the latter’s meetings with that man, and as much as she believed it wasn’t right, she covered up for her by lying to Kocoum about where she was, but warned her after that that she wouldn’t do it again. When Pocahontas ran off to see John Smith yet again, Nakoma went to Kocoum for help, fearing that her best friend would end up getting hurt.
Nakoma later saw Kocoum dead and John Smith sentenced to death, making her think about what she did that led this to happen. After she took Pocahontas to see John Smith, she did some thinking about how the Englishman may be different from the other Englishmen and how much he meant to her best friend. She even thought about whether or not it was wrong to think about all people who were different from her and her people the same way when the warriors of her tribe and the English settlers were preparing for war.
On the day the warriors of her tribe and the English settlers were about to go into war, Nakoma was with her people, seeing John Smith about to be executed until Pocahontas came in to stop the execution and speak up about her feelings for the Englishman and what came of hatred between the two sides. She was moved by her best friend’s words and how Chief Powhatan responded to what was said to him there. She also changed the way she felt and thought about the English settlers when John Smith was released and they and the warriors lowered their weapons, cancelling the war.
Nakoma became even more open to people different from her and her people when she saw how the Englishmen handled Governor Ratcliffe after he shot John Smith, and when the Englishmen were making their departure from Virginia back to England so that John Smith would be given medical treatment, meaning that Pocahontas and the man she loved had to separate. This departure left her in tears and to wonder how more people different from those in her tribe would be like if they were ever to arrive, just like the English settlers did. She would soon find out how people different from her and her people would really be like after she fell asleep that night and woke up the next morning when found herself in a place that looked nothing like the land she lived.
Ambitions:
Nakoma hoped to live a peaceful life with her people and no wars. But as she was separated from her tribe and in a place she knew nothing about with many people different from her out and about, she made it her ambition to find and reunite with her people, particularly Pocahontas. Until then, she made it another ambition of hers to get to know people who look, act, and live different from her.
Strengths & abilities:
Nakoma is strong in the mind and in spirit; she has the ability to be in control of her emotions and express how she really feels without going as far as being mean or childish in situations that make her feel mad or sad. She knows to be mature and responsible, but also knows when it is a good time to play around and have fun.
Flaws:
Nakoma is not physically strong, so she is not a fighter. She is judgmental, as she believes that anyone different from her, whether by how they look, act, speak, think, or live, is dangerous and therefore cannot be trusted. Because of this, she can end up being strict and overprotective over whom she cares for, and her way of handling a serious situation, while it looks and sounds logically reasonable, can end up putting more people in danger.
Likes:
Peace in the land and among her people, playing around with Pocahontas, her people safe
Dislikes:
Wars, being confronted by people different from her, Pocahontas running off at a bad time, her people in trouble
Fears:
Pocahontas getting hurt, weapons more advanced than what the warriors of her tribe use, meeting a new race of people different from her for the first time
Anything to add?:
None.
