An individual who was balancing a platter of food with one diminutive hand, in the scarcely free space around the crowded restaurant, and whom most everyone called for help, since she was the most accessible waitress in the room, her welcoming smile doing well to obscure the sadness in her eyes which she was fighting every single day of her life since she first got here. She was a girl, shy yet sociable, short, tanned, and still very young, although already thrust into the flames of adulthood, with no knowledge of what became of her loved ones or her future, clad in a collared shirt of pink, a skirt of white, and a bow tie of the like color.
She approached many tables, and delivered the orders of the people with very little time to think of her ongoing predicament. But she could still feel the heartbreak whenever she found herself alone and on her break, like now. No amount of budgeting could save her from homelessness, for the income wasn’t enough to live on; so she anxiously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear - a nervous tick of hers - and crossed her arms over her chest trying to ignore the rumbling in her tummy. Then, pulling out her cell phone for the hundredth time, she made a weak attempt to locate her father in her favorites list and initiate a call.
Predictably, the usual message popped up and left her desolate, desperate, “We're sorry; you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service. If you feel you have reached this recording in error, please check the number and try your call again.”
“Hey, Daddy,” she began, as if he had been the one to answer her rather than some automated feature, “it’s me, Roxanne. I was on my way to visit you when something not cool happened. T-The problem is,” she rubbed her cheek with a hand, “I don’t remember how I got here and I miss you so much. But don’t you worry, we’ll be seeing each other real soon.” She tucked away her dead phone and dropped her chin in her hands. She was a pitiful creature.
