Who am I? Just a conscience!
Introduce yourself
Hey, howdy, hey! The name's EbonyPatriot, and I wished upon a star from Whatsits Galore many moons ago (possibly linked from the old Disney Ever Notice Site?)?. My other imaginary friends include Ronno, Bolt, Accipiter, Geno & Gurri, Thunderbolt I, and Beast. Kion and I are so very eager to join the Worlds of Disney circle of life!
Character basics
Character name: Kion (he was named after his maternal grandfather, Kiongozi).
Age: 26 months old
Species: African lion, Panthera leo melanochaita
Birthplace: Pride Rock, Serengeti Region, Northern Tanzania, Africa; 11/22/1998
Movie: Lion Guard: Return of the Roar (2015)
“The Lion Guard” series (2016-2019)
Custom title: Leader of the Lion Guard
Why'd you pick this character? The Lion King has always been a family favorite. I’ve never actually joined the fansites, but I’ve followed lionking.org (especially the artists Masika, Kobb, Frodo, Epesi, Bruyere, Simba Girl and more) for years.
It definitely suffered from flaws, but I really enjoyed “Lion Guard.” Between focusing on a son of Simba (and in my humble objective opinion, utilizing him much better than official!Kopa, fan!Kopa, or 100%fan-based!Tanabi ever did), exponentially expanding the minor named characters (which I, like a lot of fans, are fascinated with— even one-shot magazine or comic characters get loved in this fandom), focusing on the non-lion characters while unlike “Lion King’s Timon and Pumbaa” (which I also liked) keeping more or less to animals native to the region, and examining just what a lion king does— the show was pretty much everything I loved about the Lion King fandom sans the less-pleasant “llama drama,”
And Kion? Well except for giving him a mane as a cub (a pet peeve of mine, and one pretty much only the original movie avoids— giving a lion cub a mane is like giving a human kid a beard!), I liked him. I like his name, his relaxed and noble personality. I like how he’s not perfect, and his fear of turning out like his uncle.
I actually have yet to watch all of the episodes ^^” but I’ve read the summaries and enjoy it. Plus, despite being a self-described “Lion King Meets Avengers”, I enjoy the rich symbolism and behind-the-scenes stuff.
Character appearance (try to get at least 2 or 3 sentences for each section)
Hair description: Kion’s coat is a similar golden color to his father, covering all but his rostral pinna, nose leather and paw pads. Like his mother, the paler ventral fur runs from under his chin, coloring his chest and belly.
When he was younger, he was most proud of the growth of red fur on his head. Appearing when he was still a cub, it always made him feel like his ‘mane’ was already in.
Of course, now that the monocolor crest has been replaced by a multishade scruffy mane…it’s taking embarrassingly long for his full mane to grow in. Currently it only runs to his occipital joint (when previously it ran to the end of the frontal bone, so at least it’s making progress). Despite his hopes that the scruff on his throat means it’s coming in…so far nada.
Facial description/mood/expressions: Kion’s face is usually relaxed and calm. Though marred now by a cobra’s fang, his eyes still reflect his good nature and noble spirit. When in battle, of course, his face shows his determination and aggression. Of course, such periods are inevitably followed by anxious worry: was he going too far? Was he using his powers in anger? Scar lost his powers in such a way… And bad as it would be to loose his powers, Kion fears acting like his cruel uncle more than anything…
Clothing style: Kion does not really understand the world of men (besides the rather confusing things Timon and Puma tell him), so clothing means nothing to him.
Body build: Stockier and more squared off than Simba and Nala, Kion shows promise of growing as powerful and bulky as his grandfather Mufasa. While his spine is a bit shorter than the average lion, he’s still longer than he is tall. Kion’s forelimbs, like Mufasa, are huge and powerful, while his hindquaerts, like his grandmothers Sarafina and Sarabi, are slim yet capable of power leaps. The tufted tail, while shorter than his parents or sister, still curves past his hocks. Kion carries his head high and proud.
Any unique traits (optional): On his left eye is freshly healed scar, courtesy of the Egyptian cobra Ushari. Both of Ushari’s fangs sliced his top brow, however only the right tooth cut below his eye.
In addition, his former Mark of the Guard, a patch of fur shaped like both a roaring lion and a paw print (with the head for the pug-mark and the toe patches for the mane) had returned to his left distal scapula.
Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
Personality:
Kion is a good-nature, happy-go-lucky lion. Although he had the Presentation of the Second-Born Son to prepare him in case he should ever rule, frankly Kion was much happier with Kiara as the future queen. In spite of the responsibilities he willingly and eagerly shouldered, there’s still a lot of the playful and rambunctious cub who romped through the Pride Lands in him.
Kion firmly believes in the lion’s role in maintaining the Circle of Life, the Higher Call that keeps all animals in order. Unlike his sire, there’s not much of the hunter in him: he’d rather befriend the local herbivores than eat them. Noble and obeying a strict code of ethics, Kion works to respect all of the creatures great and small. Kion would rather go hungry than take food from an unfair chase.
Of course, Kion is not free from flaws. Though he rather prides himself on being more diverse than his father, (er, at times he becoming quite self-righteous), he often forgets that his father was raised by a meerkat and a warthog, while his grandfather’s mystic was a mandrill and his majordomo a hornbill. In other words, he’s not quite the ground-breaker he thinks he is. Worse, he is not free from his own prejudices: it took him long to trust hyenas, and, until Zira firmly showed him otherwise, he still was firmly convinced every lion (except for Scar) is noble and reasonable.
Kion lives in fear of becoming like his great-uncle Scar. Though he despises it, even he can’t deny the similarities: the second born, destined to only be second-best. Unlike Scar, he really doesn’t care Kiara any resentment (…well, except when she gets all know-it-all and bossy…) Like Scar, he has a fiery temper: easy to aggravate, difficult to placate. This frightens him all the more, and makes him more reluctant to his powers than he should be. Like Scar, he is cunning and does not always follow the law as much as he should— he thinks nothing of trespassing and picking favorites. Fiercely loyal to his friends, he sometimes give them preferential treatment.
History:
Conceived not long before Kiara first met Kovu, Kion came into the world six months after his sister. Nicknamed “Fluffy” for his scruffy coat as a cub, Kion was given the Second-Born Son’s Presentation: with his parents and friends standing near the rock, while he waited with his sister and grandmothers. Rafiki then gently carried the cub forward and held up to the joyful animals. Mufasa had died before he and Sarabi could produce a younger brother or sister for Simba, so Kion was the first heir presumptive since Scar.
Kion was a rambunctious and friendly cub. With his best buddy Bunga (a honey badger kit Timon and Pumbaa were raising), Kion spent his days tearing through the pride land. All of the creatures had banded together with Simba to restore the Pride Lands, and the bonds had not yet faded when Kion was growing up. Though he made many friends, including the king cheetah orphan Full, the Nile hippotamasus calf Beshte, and the cattle egret chick Ono, Kion also made enemies, forever getting on Ushari’s nerves and, at one point, even almost being eaten by the crocodile Makuu.
One day, while defending Bunga against the descendants of Scar’s main hyenas, Kion shocked himself with his new power: a powerful roar, one that not only frightened Janja and the others, one that could sweep away even an elephant! Rafiki, keeper of mysteries, explained it: the second-born of the royal family always formed a team to guard the Pride Lands. There hasn’t been a Lion Guard since before Simba was born. Scar, the former leader, had seen to that: when the rest of his team refused to help him other throw Mufasa, Scar used the Roar of the Elders on them, destroying them— and loosing the gift forever.
With that, Kion changed from carefree prince to leader of his own Guard. Kion chose the best for the job— his friends: Bunga the Bravest, Ono (later Anga) the Keenest of Sight, Full the Fastest, and Beshte the Strongest. For months they guarded the Pride Lands, maintaining the Circle of Life. At first their activities were relatively run of the mill: chasing away poachers, leading the herds to new grazing grounds, keeping the peace, and helping the various fauna with their problems.
This all changed when Kion was about a year old. Rafiki took an apprentice, Makini (perhaps Nefu would have been wiser). Makini, though true-blue and well-meaning, unwittingly revealed how to bring back the Bad Kings of the Past to Ushari. The Egyptian cobra, tired of Kion’s antics, teamed up with Janja to revive the fiery spirit of the worst king to ever rule the Pride Lands: Scar. With Scar now allying all of the poachers, Kion and his friends faced fiercer battles, ones where their rivals seemed keener to fight to death. But Kion made friends too, and with the help of Mufasa’s spirit, Kion was able to dissipate Scar forever.
But Kion did not escape unharmed. Ushari had bitten him, forever scaring around his eye. Though Kion thought himself lucky to have not lost his eye, the yearling would never be the same again. Ushari hadn’t injected enough venom to kill Kion, but he had used enough of his Scar-altered venom to alter Kion’s personality, causing searing pain and bouts of aggression. No amount of time or Rafiki’s care could remove the venom from his system. And if left untreated, Kion’s conscience would erode away.
There was only one hope. Kion would have to travel far, to the Tree of Life near the Tigris river. The Tree of Life was a sanctuary for all creatures great and small, and the origin of the Roar of Elders. Kion and his friends followed Makini from miles (and countries), encountering strange creatures. Once there, he met the Night Pride, a group of Asiatic lions dedicated to guarding the Tree of Life. After speaking with Mufasa and Askari, first of the Lion Guard, Kion was finally, finally healed and defended the Tree from the African leopard Makucha and his leap. Rani, daughter of the ruling queen— who had become queen herself during Kion’s stay— begged him to stay. Kion, though he had fallen for Rani, felt his place his home and started the long trek back.
Upon returning home, Kion and friends found that much had happened in their absence. Kiara wed Kovu, Zira had already been defeated, her pride joined Simba’s— and Vitani had replaced him, leading her own Lion Guard. Though the two Guards competed in a challenge to see who should take the Pride Lands, during the mashindano (one-on-one battle), Kion recognized Vitani’s courage and selected her to take over. With that, Kion, along with the rest of his guard, lost their Mark of the Guard forever.
Askari then commended Kion, telling him that he is still needed elsewhere. Kion understood and, with the rest of his Guard, returned to the Tree of Life. Rani welcomed them as members of the Night Pride. Their ceremony, in front of their friends and family, doubled as their wedding. Kion was finally content; though he’d miss his family, the Second-Born of Pride Rock had found his place in the Circle of Life.
Until he found himself in the strange land of Disney.
Ambitions:
While he never particular wanted to be a leader, let alone a king, Kion is determined to be the best he can.
Though he’s nervous about it, he’s determined take care of his new mate and any future cubs they may produce.
To honor and protect the Circle of Life, whether in Africa or Asia.
Kion wouldn’t admit it out loud, but frankly one of his major ambitions is to finally grow in his full mane.
Strengths & abilities:
The Roar of the Elders, during which his ancestors roar with him, creating an airflow so powerful it can sent even crocodiles far away. (Albeit in this land he finds he can and does fluctuate…)
Muscular and strong, Kion combines the fighting prowess of both parents.
A noble sense of right and wrong, along with dedication to the Circle of Life.
Clever and cunning, Kion never forgets and can easily figure out most riddles (although he’s also the first to admit that he’s no match for Ono).
Flaws:
Kion has his great-uncle’s hot temper and tendency to hold a grudge.
Kion isn’t quite as just as he should be: he plays favorites and sometimes forgets the rules.
Though Kion likes to think of himself as the kind of lion who treats all animals equally, the truth is his record is far from perfect: not until after he became Leader of the Lion Guard (and with the help of Jasiri) did he finally concede that not all hyenas were bad. What’s more, despite taking in tales of wicked Scar with his mother’s milk, until Kion met Zira he was convinced that lions were indeed a noble species who could do no wrong.
Kion fears becoming like Scar, to the point where he overcompensates, neglecting to use the powers he should and avoiding speaking to his great-grandfather out of shame.
Likes:
Maintaining rule and order.
Romping with his friends.
Listening to the tales of his ancestors: his many-greats uncle Askari, his great-great-grandfather Mohatu, his great-grandparents Ahadi and Uru, his grandparents Mufasa, Sarabi, Sarafina and Kiongonzi, and his parents.
That time in-between hunts, relaxing with his friends and a full belly (and no need to hunt the animals he thinks of as friends).
Dislikes:
Any creature who breaks the Circle of lIfe.
Poachers, especially of canid kind. (And formerly Hyaneid, although Jasiri help him see past that).
Whenever animals slow him down or criticize him.
Although he never cared to be leader, he doesn’t being bossed around (okay, so it’s only when his sister does it that he minds…)
Fears:
Becoming like Scar.
Using the Roar in anger and loosing it forever— or worse, hurting his family and friends…
Anytime he cannot control things…how can he protect his family and friends?
Making the wrong choices and failing, in any way, as leader, king or husband. (This was one of reasons why he was happy to let Kiara take over, even though he did find her rather bossy and overbearing…)
Anything to add?:
Upon arriving in the parks, Kion has lost the Mark of the Pride and regained his Mark of the Guard. This frankly worries him more than his strange surroundings: has something happened to Vitani? What happened to his home? To Rani?
