Who am I? Just a conscience!
Introduce yourself
Hey, howdy, hey! The name's Heather, and I wished upon a star from Bing. My other imaginary friends include Darkwing Duck. Janja and I are so very eager to join the Worlds of Disney circle of life!
Character basics
Character name: Janja
Age: 30 months old
Species: Spotted hyena
Birthplace: The Outlands, Africa
Movie: The Lion Guard
Custom title: King of the Outlands
Why'd you pick this character? Okay, so like The Lion King is one of my personal all time favorite Disney movies and that includes the entire franchise. Yes, I enjoyed the sequel films as well as the Lion Guard series. For all of its flaws it was a lot of fun. Heck, I especially liked how they were able to bring back Scar who has always been one of my favorite Disney villains. And as for why I decided to go with Janja instead of any other character from The Lion King franchise, well he has always been one of my favorite characters from The Lion Guard and I personally found his character arc particularly interesting. Much like Aladdin's Iago, Janja went from being a baddie to one of the good guys. I really enjoy playing reformed characters and Janja is one of those rare Disney villains who turns good.
Character appearance (try to get at least 2 or 3 sentences for each section)
Hair description:
A good looking, sturdy and muscular spotted hyena with grey fur and darker grey spots, the lower half of his legs are black, and a lighter colored stomach. Furthermore, he has a long black spiky mane, a black tail, a black nose, large pointy ears, and bright yellow eyes.
Facial description/mood/expressions:
As for expressions goes, Janja is a very expressive character who shows a wide range of emotions. Regardless of who he is fighting, Janja's face is one of determination, persistence, and full on aggression. Usually not one to back down from a fight unless he is outnumbered and losing, Janja can be particularly stubborn and overly persistent with his facial features reflecting this. Further he is rather impulsive and reckless since even after being kicked out of the Pridelands by The Lion Guard; Janja just leads his clan right back in immediately afterwards. His lips are usually twisted into a mischievous smile even after reforming.
Janja also gets easily annoyed and frustrated by the stupidity of his seconds in command; which is visible on his face. Whenever startled, nervous or scared his ears tend to lower and flatten on the sides. It's also easy to tell when he is confused like the time when Jasiri saved his life despite all he's done.
While trying to share important Intel with Simba and Kion, Janja has a visibly worried look on his face when the croc leader, Makuu threatened to eat him should his information prove false and/or useless. After Scar's defeat, Janja looks remorseful and appears to want to say something to Kion, but for some reason decides against it.
Clothing style:
As a quad hyena, Janja has no need for human things like clothes and jewelry.
Body build:
Janja has a sturdy, muscular build. In fact, his physical stature just oozes physical strength and durability. He has large pointy ears and a spiky black mane. Interestingly enough even as a teen, Janja is nearly as big as Nala.
Any unique traits (optional):
Janja has a visible notch on his left ear that he got while killing Banagi and one of his dark grey spots forms a heart shape on his back. Further, his yellow eyes seemingly glow against the darkness.
Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
Personality:
Originally, Janja was no better than his ancestors. Growing up he had been taught to be rotten, mean, and nasty. He had been taught from an early age all about being cruel to others and to disrespect the circle of life since he once saw it as something that only fools follow. He was very greedy with a ravenous hunger who tended to overhunt and eat more than his own fair share. He used to care very little for others outside his own clan since he arrogantly tends to view hyenas as superior to all other creatures and how he saw his clan superior to other clans especially Jasiri's. Further, Janja can be rather stubborn, impulsive, and reckless at times. One example of his impulsive, reckless behavior is as soon as he and his hyenas get kicked out of the Pridelands by The Lion Guard; Janja just immediately leads his clan right back in. Additionally, Janja was once very aggressive, impatient, short-tempered, and irritable. Back then he got mad very easily since it usually didn't take much to drive the hyena up the walls. He was easily frustrated by his seconds in command's blatant stupidity.
Furthermore, he really didn't care that nature dictated that it is the female hyenas who are normally in charge of clans since his own pride wouldn't allow him to see the logic behind female hyenas leading their clan. He didn't care that they were bigger and stronger than him because he had his own ambitious desire to lead his own clan rejecting nature.
Following his reformation, he is already on the path of becoming a better person er hyena. But he is still by nature a carnivore and as such he still loves hunting and eating meat. His reformation didn't stop that. In fact, he enjoys eating meat so much that he pretty much represents the infamous sin of gluttony. Sadly given his love for food, Janja could easily be taken advantage of especially now that he has found himself in a strange new world so far from his home and allies. As such he is easily tempted with food. While Janja is struggling to be better there is still a lot he is willing to do and even put up with for an easy meal especially if he's starving and desperate. He also gets pretty grumpy whenever he is suddenly and forcibly roused from one of his naps since he is not a morning person.
Furthermore, Janja doesn't take too kindly to food thieves and uninvited guests who dare trespass into his territory and steal food from him. Whenever he catches them in the act he usually threatens to eat them since he is fiercely defensive of his turf and food. Which kind of makes him something of a hypocrite since he isn't above stealing food from others and he will gladly do so should he get away with it. However, Janja is also a bit of a coward who only attacks when he has the advantage of numbers. He always retreats whenever he is outnumbered, overpowered, and losing.
Unlike most of his clan, Janja is highly intelligent and is known to be the only hyena to use his cunning to get what he wants; a trait shared with Scar. Following this, Janja is also a very charismatic leader; which explained how he was able to recruit so many animals to Scar's cause. He had leadership qualities since he was a young cub; which only grew as he aged. Much like Kion, Janja is able to get his clan to work together to achieve their goals. Being a leader himself, Janja cannot stand anyone trying to boss him around unless it's by someone he holds in high esteem like Jasiri.
He is, however, not as smart as he thinks he is and makes himself out to be. While his intelligence is undeniable there are still others even more intelligent than himself. There are certain concepts that Janja has some difficulty understanding; that is until someone slowly explains it to him in a way that even he can understand. Ignorant when it comes to human things. Janja being a wild hyena doesn't understand the world of man at all. He doesn't know anything about them except his instincts tell him to fear their weapons.
The hyena leader is also something of a people pleaser as he would do just about everything he could to keep Scar happy. He would follow orders without question. Following his reformation this attitude has not changed. He still wants to do whatever he can to keep his current allies happy. Additionally, Janja doesn't take too well to acts of betrayal. He tends to hold a grudge against those who do betray him making it highly unlikely he will forget them anytime soon.
Still new to the whole good guy thing, Janja is in constant war with himself. It is clear he wants to do the right thing he just doesn't always know what the right thing is since he's been raised his entire life to believe that the "Circle of Life is for fools."
History:
Early Background:
Janja and his clan are the direct descendants of Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. After they devoured Scar during the great fire of Pride Rock the hyena trio fled taking half of their hyena clan with them. Nobody knew for sure where they fled to and what became of them after the great fire. But one thing was certain nobody had seen them since.
While the hyena trio may have vanished without a trace the remaining hyenas decided to remain in the Outlands likely because they were all too exhausted from the fight against the lions to flee any further. This led to much infighting for leadership within the remaining clan members without Shenzi to lead them. In the end, a large and powerful female hyena by the name of Mwenye defeated all who challenged her earning her the role as the clan's new leader and Shenzi's replacement. She proved to be every bit as cold and ruthless as her predecessor and she took the role as clan leader very seriously.
Not long after, Mwenye gave birth to a little hyena cub she named, Janja. She wanted more, but only ended up having him. Still she was thrilled to have someone she can mold into being just like her. Sadly though his being male made it highly unlikely that he would ever get to lead his own clan. Even so, Mwenye and her loyal mate and Janja's father, Guvu took their roles as parents very seriously teaching their only cub everything they knew. This included how they believed hyenas should act and unfortunately they truly believed that all hyenas should be rotten and mean. And worst of all, thanks largely to Scar's influence, they disrespected the Circle of Life. Even after they devoured Scar alive their attitude did not change.
Even as a young cub, Janja was always bugging his parents and the other adult hyenas with pesky questions like, "what's the Circle of Life and why don't we follow it? If the Circle of Life is so foolish then why do other animals respect it?" He also enjoyed hearing stories told to him by other his parents or by the other adult hyenas. Unfortunately, for the clan, Janja became particularly fascinated by the legend of Scar. He found the very idea of a lion allying himself with hyenas intriguing. Luckily the clan had a plan. Because they didn't like discussing their former alliance with Scar they decided to lie to their cubs about it. They informed Janja and his friends that while it is true that they had allied themselves with Scar his plan to takeover the Pridelands and give them as much meat as they want didn't exactly work out. They told him it did at first until a fully grown adult Simba returned to challenge Scar for kingship and ruined everything! According to them Scar defeated Simba even tossing his nephew right off Pride Rock while Scar himself perished in the great fire that started at Pride Rock while losing his mind and laughing like a nut. They deliberately left out the part of how they ate Scar alive because they didn't like talking about it. Thankfully, it was enough to satisfy the young, inquisitive Janja.
It was around this time that, Janja had befriended two other hyena cubs, Cheezi and Chungu. They met when Janja snuck off from his parents to go play and while playing the trio got hungry. So rather than just go home, Janja came up with the 'brilliant' scheme to steal some food from some poor unsuspecting animal. Unfortunately for him he chose a family of sleeping jackals to steal from. Somehow the three made it safely inside the jackal den without being spotted. However, the jackals woke up as soon as Janja and his new friends were making off with pieces from their latest kill. Outraged, the jackals chased after the thieving hyena pups. Terrified out of their minds, Janja and his new friends ran for their very lives. Unfortunately, Janja led them straight to a dead end. Thankfully, both of Janja's parents showed up and were able to save the cubs from the angry jackals. The jackals ran off but not before warning the cubs to never return to their den or they will be eaten. Janja's parents were not pleased and punished him when they got home.
Not long after the jackal incident, Janja once again ran off to play with Cheezi and Chungu. Only this time he thought it would be fun to sneak into the Pridelands and cause trouble there. Initially though the three weren't really doing anything bad and were mostly just chasing each other around and pouncing on one another. But then much like last time the trio got hungry. As they debated on what to eat, Janja spotted an egret's nest; which happened to be unguarded at the time. Janja suggested that they eat egret egg for their midday snack. Taking the egg from its nest was the easy part since nobody was watching it, but getting away with it ended up being an entirely different matter altogether. The hyena cub trio were quickly confronted by Kion and his friends. The trio tried to fight them to no avail for Kion and his friends were easily able to overpower them and kick them out of the Pridelands. This was the very first time the two groups fought each other and thus Janja and Kion's rivalry began. Little did Janja know that within the very egg he was trying so desperately to steal held a tiny baby Ono inside who would later become the Keenest of Sight and then later the Smartest.
Janja and his buddies thought that they'd seen the last of Kion, but sadly for them that just wasn't the case. Ever since the egg incident, he and his buddies constantly found themselves running afoul of the pint sized Prideland heroes and not one of those incidents ended in victory for the hyena cub trio. Luckily for him his mother had taken some notice. She saw in him a lot of leadership potential as well as growing ambition despite being male and decided to help him by teaching him...certain questionable techniques. She taught him intimidation techniques as well as some fighting moves and how to dodge incoming attacks. She taught him best she could further molding him into a smaller male version of herself. Naturally, Janja didn't see anything wrong with any of this since she was his mom and as such she fully had his trust.
Then one day tragedy struck the hyena clan. A lone strange female hyena trespassed into their territory. Her name was Banagi and she was even larger than Mwenye. Instinctively, Mwenye's clan prepared to chase the intruder off when Banagi challenged Mwenye for clan leadership. With the full support of her clan, of her mate, and of her son, the overconfident Mwenye readily accepted the intruder's challenge. It was a long and difficult fight, but in the end to everybody's great surprise and dismay the intruder won and not only that, but the once powerful Mwenye now layed lifeless at her paws. Stunned at having seen his mate killed right before him, Guvu screamed her name and tried desperately to wake her up. When she didn't wake, Guvu in a blind rage turned and attacked Banagi as did the entire clan. Amazingly, Banagi defeated all of them and in the end they were all forced to surrender. Now in charge of the entire clan she cruelly chased Guvu out of their territory banishing him for his defiance. Janja, meanwhile, was in total shock and started after his father only to be forced back by Banagi who told him that he wouldn't be punished for his parents' failures.
With both of his parents now gone, Banagi took it upon herself to continue to raise the cub. Janja hated it, but wasn't given any choice in the matter. But that didn't stop him from trying to be defiant and fighting Banagi on everything. She wanted to raise him? Fine. But he wasn't going to make it easy for her. Sadly, once Janja started to get a little older and bigger, Banagi started to force him and his friends to hunt for her and Janja hated every minute of it. All in all Banagi was a terrible leader and everybody hated her since she practically had them all enslaved.
Unable to take much more of Banagi, Janja came up with a slick plan to get rid of her for good. When it was nighttime and everybody was fast asleep, Janja led a team of fellow teenaged hyenas to assassinate Banagi in her sleep. The plan worked. The group swarmed her in her sleep and by the time she awoke and tried to fight back it was too late. However, during her final moments she did manage to bite a piece of Janja's left ear off leaving the teenaged hyena with an ear notch. The young hyenas managed to kill her freeing themselves and the rest of their clan from her tyranny. And Janja was happy to have won for once.
However, the clan was once again without a leader. Thinking it only fair that he now lead them since it was his plan that got rid of Banagi, Janja took over as the clan's newest leader. Unfortunately, because he was so young and inexperienced Janja wasn't exactly a great leader either. Leagues better than Banagi for sure, but still that's not saying much. Young as he was, Janja was already every bit as greedy and gluttonous as his ancestors and on top of all that he already was disrespecting the Circle of Life; which proved to be a problem for many of the adult hyenas in Janja's clan.
No longer able to stand their inexperienced gluttonous leader, one by one the adults gradually left the clan and went in search for a better one to join or even to create their own. Pretty soon, Janja was left with only male teenaged hyenas for followers; which due to his tendency to not always care for logic was just fine by him. For the longest time, Janja had no idea where the deserters of his clan ended up until one fateful day when he and his followers were out hunting. During their hunt they ran into a young female hyena named, Jasiri. Initially, Janja wanted to befriend her and have her join him. That all changed, however, when Jasiri curtly informed Janja that she had been warned about him by the newest members of her clan. Upon realizing those new members were his missing deserters, Janja demanded their return and when Jasiri refused a big fight broke out between the two. Severely outnumbered, Jasiri was about to lose until her entire clan showed up and together they were easily able to defeat Janja and his small clan. As he fled back to his territory, Janja warned her that it wasn't over and that he will come back for his deserters and thus his rivalry with Jasiri began. True to his word, Janja stubbornly kept trying to reclaim his deserters only to be constantly defeated by Jasiri and her clan. Eventually though, Janja gave up trying to force his former clam members to return. But that didn't stop him from hating Jasiri and their rivalry continued and evolved into something else entirely.
At some point during his new role as clan leader, Janja has grown curious about the goingson in both the Outlands and outside of it. And so upon learning of the vultures nosiness he made a deal with them. In return for spying for him and keeping him informed and up to date on current events, Janja promised the vultures a piece of their kill. Finding Janja's offer fair, Mzingo, the vulture's leader agreed to be his ears and eyes.
Show Events:
One fateful day when Janja was feeling hungry and complaining that food was scarce in the Outlands he ordered his seconds, Cheezi and Chungu to fetch him something to eat. They spotted Bunga and tried to capture him for food only to be swiftly stopped by an angry Kion and his powerful Roar of the Elders. When his seconds returned empty handed to Janja to inform him of what happened, Janja had a hard time believing it and just thought the two were making up excuses.
That is until, Mzingo showed up and warned him that Kion now possesses the Roar of the Elders and is in the process of forming his very own Lion Guard. Janja knowing of the Guard, of the Roar, and of its history having been told numerous stories about it from his parents feared that sneaking into the Pridelands and hunting will be made even more difficult with a fully formed Lion Guard running around defending it. Sensing this the perfect opportunity to strike the Pridelands since the Guard is not yet ready, Janja led his clan and the vultures to attack and kill some gazelle. Initially, his plan goes without a hitch; that is until the Lion Guard showed up just in time to thwart his evil plot. After a brief one on one between Janja and Kion; the Lion Guard's leader then used his powerful Roar of the Elders to literally blow Janja and his hyenas far away. Prior to retreating back to his den in the Outlands, Janja vowed vengeance on Kion and his friends.
True to his word, Janja continually came up with various outlandish schemes and all of them foiled by Kion and his Lion Guard. Most of his schemes dealt with overhunting the various prey animals living in the Pridelands. His other schemes included: trying to defeat Jasiri, trying to trap the Lion Guard so they can kill some zebras, trying to eat Bunga again, trying to eat some baby animals, trying to force a drongo to help them, and at one point Janja with four of his hyenas tried to kill Nala.
Later during the dry season, Janja and his clan desperate and starving goes after the elephants only to be stopped by the Lion Guard and Kion's roar. Back in the Outlands and still hungry, Janja spotted the snake, Ushari slithering around and tried to eat him. But before he can, Ushari striked a deal with him. He will help Janja summon Scar's evil spirit, so that Scar's ghost can then help the hyenas defeat the Lion Guard and Janja will spare his life in return. While Janja didn't entirely believe Ushari's plot to summon Scar's ghost would work he went along with the plan mainly out of curiosity. The plan entailed for the hyenas to steal Makini's staff and kidnap Kiara to lure Kion to the volcano. After a long standoff between Janja and Kion that initially was going nowhere, Janja finally was able to trick Kion into roaring at the volcano after threatening his family; which caused the volcano to erupt. After the Lion Guard left, Ushari attempted to use Makini's staff to summon Scar only for it to not work. Frustrated and angry that it didn't work, Janja kicked the staff right into the volcano summoning Scar.
After summoning up Scar, Janja became one of his loyal minions and in return he hoped that Scar's ingenious plans will lead his clan to victory. In addition to his usual schemes to overhunt he now commits all sorts of villainous acts for Scar and as to not rouse suspicion Janja took credit for Scar's evil plans. Additionally, he helped Scar and Ushari recruit some very useful allies to their cause: Reirei's jackals and Kiburi's crocs and together along with the skinks and the vultures they became known as Scar's Army. The major missions he sent Janja and his hyenas on were to kill Beshte, kill Jasiri, kidnap Zazu to force the bird to tell them useful royal secrets, and eliminate Rafiki. Thankfully all of their plans were foiled by the Lion Guard and Kion's roar.
Scar's next evil plot had him send a scorpion out to assassinate Simba with his venomous sting. The scorpion did just that and predictably the Lion Guard goes to the volcano to get the volcanic ash necessary to cure Kion's dad. Scar hoped that his army would keep the guard busy long enough that it would be too late to give the king the cure. The hyenas did their best to keep the guard busy milking every second it only for the guard to successfully get away from them and leave with the volcanic ash.
One day, Scar learned from the skinks that the female hyena he sent Janja and his clan to kill is still alive and not only that, but had formed a hyena resistance to foil his ingenious evil plans. Upset and disappointed in Janja for failing to inform him of Jasiri's survival, Scar sent Janja and his clan out to surround Jasiri's clan and end her once and for all. Initially, the plan works until the lion guard showed up in time to save Jasiri's clan. Unable to take much more of this and wanting to prove himself to Scar, Janja targeted Jasiri specifically in the fight only to get accidentally knocked into a nearby lava pit forcing Janja to hang on for dear life. He tried to climb back up on his own only to slip. After Kion used the roar to get rid of the other members of Scar's army, Janja getting desperate yelled for help alerting Jasiri to his dire situation. To Janja's shock, surprise, and confusion, Jasiri saved him. Rather than mock her, Janja simply asked her why she saved him even after everything he did and tried to do to which Jasiri replied that she would help any hyena reminding him of "sisi ni sawa." She then offered him a chance to defect from Scar and join her and her clan to defeat him. He hesitated for a moment giving her offer some serious thought before refusing her offer and running off claiming they are not the same. The only reason he refused Jasiri's offer was out of fear. He feared what Scar might do to him if he accepted and he also feared what would have become of his friends had he joined Jasiri. He wouldn't have been there to help them. So in a weird sort of way he ultimately rejected Jasiri's offer out of necessity. Unbeknownst to him, however, the skinks witnessed his initial hesitation and decided to tell Scar all about it.
Afterwards, Janja's missions for Scar had him and his allies take over the Pridelands piece by piece. They would essentially steal the land by setting fire to it and after the Pridelanders flee they move in and take it over. During one of these land sieges, Scar deliberately revealed himself to the Pridelanders who very understandably panicked and fled after seeing him.
Several months pass with everybody getting bigger, older, and stronger. Soon Janja and his minions tire of guarding a piece of land making Janja reconsider Jasiri's previous offer. As before the skinks witness Janja and his clan's growing unhappiness as Scar's minions. Naturally, the skinks warn Scar of this. Scar doesn't seem to care too much and in fact, comes up with a sinister plan to kill all his enemies at once including Janja and his clan. When Janja arrived back to the volcano, Scar gave him his final mission. He told him he wanted him and his hyenas to keep the guard busy inside their lair while the vultures set fire to Pride Rock. Thinking it an easy mission and not suspecting Scar of anything Janja agreed.
After getting the lion guard's attention, Janja and his clan ran inside their lair with the lion guard chasing after them. As Scar ordered, Janja and his hyenas keep the guard busy and distracted. Unfortunately, the fire came sooner than Janja expected even reaching the lion guard lair's entrance. Janja saw the fire in time to jump over it. Sadly his minions weren't able to follow after him as the fire grew too large.
Realizing Scar betrayed them, Janja ran off to get Jasiri's help. At her den, he told her what Scar did and how his clan and the lion guard are trapped by fire. Janja followed Jasiri back into the Pridelands and they get there just in time to see that both Janja's clan and the lion guard escaped the fire. Having defected fully from Scar, Janja instead allied himself and his clan with the Pridelanders against Scar and the rest of Scar's army. Believing Scar's lies about how Kion can defeat him, Janja informed the Pridelanders with this new seemingly helpful Intel. Janja informed Kion that the only way he can defeat Scar is to use the most powerful roar he's got at the volcano claiming that the volcanic flames will overwhelm the evil ghost lion and consume him.
Now on the side of good, Janja and Jasiri led the hyenas against the other Outlanders. During the fight the hyenas mainly targeted the jackals and Kiburi's float. While Kion and his guard head into the volcano to defeat Scar, the hyenas keep the other Outlanders at bay. Janja doesn't know all of the details of what happened at the volcano, but he does know one thing. Kion caused it to rain and Janja was later told that the rain put Scar out. So he was wrong about Kion needing to use his roar against the volcano? While he may have been wrong he was glad that Kion figured out the right way to destroy Scar on his own.
After Kion and his guard left the volcano, Janja proudly declared Jasiri the new leader of the outlands and forged his clan into hers. Mzingo and his vultures quickly agreed to follow the circle of life and Jasiri's rule, so Janja rehired him as his majordomo. While Kion and his friends are away Janja and Jasiri are able to keep the peace for the most part.
That is until one day when Mzingo informed them of Zira's growing ambitions and of her plans to invade the Pridelands. Fearing her and her army of evil lionesses; they ran off to the Tree of Life to fetch Kion and his friends for help. Upon making it to the Tree they are able to convince Kion and his guard to return home and save the Pridelands from Zira unaware that it was already being taken care of by Kiara and Kovu.
Along the way back home, Janja learned how to be a better good guy even helping the guard save some animals along the way. Once back in the Outlands they face off against a new lion guard in battle due to a misunderstanding. Luckily Kiara and Kovu showed up and are able to explain the situation calming everyone down. With the threat no more, Janja and the hyenas return to their turf leaving Kion to deal with a new issue: which guard is the real lion guard?
Later Janja and the hyenas accompanied the lion guard back to the tree of life for Kion and Rani's wedding ceremony. It is shown that Janja and Jasiri have become closer friends too. In fact, Janja often finds himself trying to do everything in his power to keep Jasiri happy.
That is until one day when he was out hanging out with Jasiri, Janja found himself in the Outlands no longer nor in any sort of land he had ever seen before. He instead found himself in completely new surroundings with strange two-legged creatures running all over the place. Little did he realize that he had been magically transported to the world of man; specifically to Disney World, "the happiest place on Earth." Regardless, the hyena wasn't laughing anymore.
