Character basics
Character name: Pepa Madrigal
Age: 50
Species: human
Birthplace: Colombia
Movie: Encanto
Custom title: a different kind of ☀meteorologist☂
Why'd you pick this character?I was drawn to her when I first saw the Family Madrigal song video. I watched it, and said “who is that, I like her.”
Who's the fairest of them all?
Character appearance (try to get at least 2 or 3 sentences for each section)
Hair description: Pepa has curly hair that she keeps tied back in a braid. Her auburn locks may be mostly out of place in her family, (shared only with her son Camilo) but she takes pride in her curls.
Facial description/mood/expressions: Even if Pepa could control her facial expressions, her mood would be easily discernible. But, she’s not so great at concealing her emotions, and it’s even more obvious with the weather phenomena that comes with her mood. And much like the weather, Pepa can swing from one extreme to another with little notice.
Clothing style: Pepa prefers bright colors, especially yellows, and she absolutely must have at least one ruffle somewhere. She likes an ankle-length gown or skirt, with some accents but nothing too overstimulating. She always wears a pair of sun earrings.
Body build: Pepa is lithe, though not as graceful as her niece Isabela. She lacks the buff muscles of her second niece Luisa, but she can carry her own weight in the family. Her skin is a bit lighter than her brother and sister.
Any unique traits (optional): in Lilo's voice: Pepa controls the weather. It’s not uncommon to see a cloud or a rainbow following her.
Curiouser and curiouser about..
Original character analysis (In your own words and please be thorough)
Personality:
Like the weather, Pepa’s personality has many sides. Her default is optimistic and happy, evidenced by a lack of clouds and rain. However, it doesn’t take much for her upbeat mood to swing low. She’s been described as overly emotional, and she accepts such a judgment with a shrug, because she knows it’s true.
History:
Pepa grew up alongside her siblings Julieta and Bruno. At five years old, Pepa received the gift of weather-control. It was a big responsibility for such a young child, and despite her best effort she did cause a few flooding and drought periods for the town.
She met Felix in the town as a young teen, while helping clear the flooding issues she had unintentionally brought upon the town after a tantrum. Felix was sweet, attentive, and funny, and Pepa felt that he was able to stabilize her mood like no one else had been able to. He was a rock for Pepa.
During their courtship, the floodwaters receded a bit faster than usual, due to a persistent and bright sun.
Several years later, Pepa married Felix in a hurricane. Not her finest moment, but the day had started off as bright and clear as Pepa’s mood. The shift was brought on by anxiety, when Bruno tried to make a joke about Pepa crying happy tears. “It looks like rain,” he told her. The light teasing from a younger brother backfired, and Pepa’s anxiety brought on an onslaught of rain.
Besides, rain on your wedding day is supposed to be lucky, right?
And Pepa indeed felt lucky. She had three beautiful children: Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. And each in their time gained a gift and Pepa watched each ceremony bursting with pride. And as any good sister would do, Pepa helped her sister Julieta with her children, Pepa’s nieces: Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel.
The problems started with Mirabel’s ceremony. She didn’t receive a gift, Bruno had a frightening vision and then left, and Pepa felt a bit broken. While she had never cared for Bruno’s prophecies, and she was still mildly upset about her wedding day (she never realized it was a jest) he was still her brother, and she loved him.
Mirabel nearly ruined Antonio’s ceremony with the announcement that the magic was breaking. Honestly Pepa spent the next day or so dealing with her own power struggles, and trying to keep Antonio’s mood up. He’d only had his powers for a few hours when Mirabel came in bursting about losing their powers! Dolores and Camilo were old enough to have more of a handle on their emotions, and Antonio was so young! As a result, Pepa and Felix did their best to keep Antonio close during the insanity.
Something happened, and Casita crumbled, doing its best to get everyone out before the candle toppled and the magic died. Pepa watched in fear as (what felt like) her life collapsed before her eyes. And… where was Mirabel?
Mirabel emerged, and with help from the town, the family Madrigal rebuilt Casita. Mirabel brought the magic back, and life didn’t just return to normal, it improved. Bruno had returned, and Mirabel no longer felt ostracized. Her family was back.
