There was a small commotion at the entrance to one of the stores that lined Main Street, as a group of men jostled at the door arguing amongst themselves and vying for position beside the emporium. The reason for the disturbance was soon revealed as a petite woman emerged through the door, idly dropping her purchase into the hands of a waiting attendant as she raised a parasol to shield herself from the sun.
“Oh boys,” gushed Katrina Van Tassel, smiling sweetly as she turned to face her throng of admirers, “you’re all so kind. And I do promise there aren’t many shops left.” She giggled quietly, smirking to herself as she turned away and stepped carefully down off the pavement. With the slightest wave of her hand she had the men following her again, leading them across to the other side of the Street as if she were the pied piper’s daughter.
“Oh dear,” muttered Katrina, pausing for a moment in the street. These simple words had her admirers crowded around her, clamouring away to find out what the problem was; which was of course the very reaction that Katrina had wanted from them. She put on a sad face, looking wistfully into the distance as she spoke.
“Whatever shall I do? That store is far too crowded for little old me,” she wiped away an imaginary tear, however this action was more to cover the smile that spread across her face, for as per her expectations several of the group immediately bustled ahead of her into the shop and cleared a path for her to enter.
“You’re all far too kind,” complimented the Coquette as she passed them, flicking the parasol down again and smiling sweetly.
