movie: Sleeping Beauty (1959)
title:
ONCE upon a {dream}
why: I have loved Disney since I was born and Aurora has always been my favourite Disney princess. I simply love Disney and I've seen Sleeping Beauty over a hundred times. It always seems to get better every time I watch it and I don't think I'll ever get sick of it. I know all the songs by heart and can almost always be found listening to one of them or singing them.

charrie appearance[/ul]
facial description/mood expressions: She has blue eyes and a soft smile. Her lips are pink and she has soft cheeks. Her expression is usually always one of happiness but she is known to sometimes lose her temper.
clothing style: Typical of a princess she wears a pretty gown however in the beginning of the movie when she is forced to hide away she wears a peasant outfit.
Briar Rose outfit
As Briar Rose, Aurora is seen wearing a simple peasant skirt with a black corset over a white blouse and a black headband. Outdoors she also wears a purple shawl.
Gowns
Aurora's gown consists of a dark coloured bodice with a lighter coloured skirt and sleeves. It has a white neckline that falls just below her shoulders. This is worn with her gold tiara and a gold necklace.
Although Aurora only has one gown it is seen changing colour throughout the film due to Flora and Merryweather. When she pricks her finger, for example, her gown is blue. In the last scene though it starts blue but then changes colour at regular intervals.
body build: She is quite tall and slender.

original charrie analysis. (everything must be in your own words! please be thorough.)[/ul]
history: As soon as Aurora was born she was betrothed to Prince Phillip in order to unite the kingdoms of King Stefan and King Hubert. The two men were very pleased with their arrangement. King Hubert’s son was five years old when Aurora was born. At her christening she was given gifts from two of the three fairies who had attended. She was given the gift of beauty and song. Before the third fairy could giver Aurora her gift an evil fairy named Maleficent burst in. She was furious that she had not been invited to the ceremony and insisted upon giving the young princess a gift too. The King and Queen could do nothing to stop her. Raising her wand she cursed Aurora, saying that when she turned sixteen she would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. Before anyone could arrest her she disappeared. The third fairy however, could not break the spell but only make it less threatening. She instead said that Aurora would not die but fall asleep.
The King and Queen were still angry and they ordered every spinning wheel in the kingdom to be burnt. They did not stop there, however. They decided that they needed to protect Aurora further for Maleficent was a powerful fairy. So with great sadness they let Flora, Fauna and Merryweather slip her away in the dead of night and take her to live in a cottage in the woods. They decided that she could not know about who she really was. Instead the three good fairies posed as her aunts and they lived as peasants, naming the princess Briar Rose.
Briar Rose grew up very pretty indeed and she loved her aunts dearly. She remained oblivious to her true identity and the danger she was really in. She carried on life and was always very happy. Though she would not let her aunts know, she was really very lonely. She had been brought up on one strict rule: never talk to strangers. Rose followed this rule carefully and whenever she was out picking berries or on other tasks she never spoke to strangers.
Because of her loneliness she often spoke to the animals. Many of her animal friends included the owl, robins and other various birds, rabbits, squirrels and many other woodland creatures. She often sung with the birds and they were her only real friends. On multiple occasions they accompanied her and helped her to pick berries or do her many other tasks.
Every night she had dreams of a handsome, young prince. Although she did not know his name she referred to him as her dream prince and told her animal friends stories of him. During her dreams he would ride towards her on his white horse and sweep her off her feet, dancing and singing with her. They would fall in love and talk together, holding hands and walking through the forests. However she would always wake up at the exact moment before he told her his name. Each night she would have the same dream and Rose believed that if you dreamt something more than once it would come true.
Soon enough the sixteen years had passed and all too quickly. For some reason her aunts sent Briar Rose out to pick berries, even though she had picked some the day before. Without arguing she went out with her basket and shawl. Walking along she met her animal friends and told them once more about her dream prince. She then started to sing and did not realise that she had caught the attention of Prince Phillip. Suddenly, her animal friends came forward with a cape, hat and boots, ready to pretend to be her dream prince. Dancing and singing she was caught unawares by Prince Phillip who had joined in the song.
She was about to rush off because he was a stranger when Phillip claimed that they had met before. She was instantly in love and they sang and danced together. The talked as they looked out on Stefan’s kingdom and Rose rested her head on Phillip’s shoulder. When Briar Rose started to leave again Phillip asked when he would see her again. She started to say never but then told him to meet her in the cottage by the glen, hoping he knew the one. Rushing off she made her way back towards her home.
When she got back home she was surprised by her aunts who wished her happy birthday and presented her with a cake and a lovely dress. She told them about the man she had met and they realised that she was in love. It was then that they told her who she really was and Rose was heartbroken. However, she did what her aunts and everyone else wanted of her and she went to the castle that night, instead of staying to meet Phillip.
During the night they slipped off to go to the castle, Aurora wearing the dress and also a hooded cape. They took her to a room and set her down by the dresser. It was there that they placed a golden tiara on her head. But Aurora couldn’t stop herself from crying. Hesitantly, the three fairies left her alone. That was when she saw the light, a green light by the mantelpiece. Getting up her cape fell and she followed the light, hypnotised by its power. The fairies rushed in but the wall appeared again in front of them and Aurora continued up the stairs, ignorant to their cries or the danger she was in. The fairies finally broke through and they rushed after their princess. Aurora found herself in a dark room; a fairy was standing there beside a spinning wheel. The light emanated from the spindle and she reached out her hand. She hesitated for a moment as she heard the fairies cry, “don’t touch anything.” However she couldn’t help herself and the power was too strong. Her finger touched the spindle and suddenly everything went black.
Aurora didn’t know how long she was asleep for but throughout that period of time she dreamt of her dream prince who she was now clear was the man she had met in the woods. In her dreams she danced and sang with him and they were happy. But her dreams were also haunted with a dark figure, one who threatened to take away her prince, Maleficent.
The princess awoke to see none other than her dream prince sitting beside her. It was then that he told her that he was Prince Phillip, and they shared another kiss. They happily walked down the staircase into the main ballroom to greet their parents and celebrate the official engagement.
ambitions: To marry Phillip, learn how to cook
strengths && abilities: Talented singer and dancer
flaws: Is easily distracted, not a very good cook
likes: Prince Phillip, her parents (Stefan and Leah), King Hubert, animals
dislikes: Being asleep for too long, spinning wheels
fears: That she'll prick her finger on a spinning wheel, that she'll fall asleep and never wake up
what makes this character unique: Princess Aurora is the only Disney princess who does not end up the main hero at the end. Instead, it is really her prince who is the main hero. She falls asleep half way through the film and ends up being saved by Prince Phillip who gets a larger role than any of the other princes. She is kind and loving girl who also has a sense of humour. She is not the one fighting the evil but, the one being saved from it.
RP SAMPLE: ----
It was mid-afternoon and the wind was starting to pick up. It wasn’t too strong and it was only spring but the weather had been a little strange lately. The birds were up and singing their happy songs and every so often a female voice would come in to join their song. The princess walked along the castle gardens with the birds flying beside her happily. Aurora hit a high ‘c’ and one of the younger birds tried to copy it, going a little sharp and gaining a laugh from everyone around. “There, there,” Aurora whispered. “You’ll get it soon enough. Just practice.” A smile crept onto her lips as the young bird settled on her shoulder. She stopped to pet its head and a few of the other birds rested on a hedge beside the path. The little bird puffed out his chest proudly and chirped a few words, though the princess could not understand them.
Settling down on a bench she let the little bird rest on the metal arm. “Okay now, repeat after me,” she said. Then she started to sing up the arpeggio. It was a simple ‘c’ major and she only went up the first octave. Her voice hit every note perfectly, neither sharp nor flat. It was a talent that she had ever since she was little and living in the cottage in the woods. Even there she would sing with the birds and teach some of the younger ones how to pitch the note. But back then she had also told them stories of her dream prince. It seemed like so far away that she had done those kinds of things but it was really little under a year ago. Since her sixteenth birthday so much had happened.
She was distracted from her thoughts when the little bird started to follow. He was a little sharp on the higher notes but that would soon be fixed. He would learn by listening to the others. Soon enough all the other birds had joined in her arpeggio, some of them venturing up to the second octave of the scale. Aurora joined in and hit the high ‘c’ clearly and with precision. They then went down the arpeggio again. The birds turned the scale into a rhythm and soon they had a clear countermelody as Aurora started to sing. She started off by humming but soon got the rhythm and started to improvise on the words. It went something like the song she had sung to the birds in the woods before Phillip had turned up but the rhythm was different and it was in a different key.
As they sang Aurora became aware that Phillip had walked up towards them. He was listening intently; Aurora guessed he was trying to pick up the rhythm. Soon enough he came in with a second duet part lower than her but the same melody. She smiled up at him and as he sat down beside her she linked her fingers through his. They finished up the song and the couple smiled at each other warmly. “You were a little flat,” Aurora joked softly, laughing cheekily with him. She hadn’t seen him since breakfast and it was good to be beside him again. It was strange but she found it hard to be away from him, perhaps that was what love did to you.
