Mikie wheeled around at the sound behind him. He'd been wandering aimlessly with nothing to do, wondering where Doris had disappeared to, and now, there she was, reappearing with the time macnine from one of her jaunts to the future.
"Oh. You're back." He always felt a little lost when the hat wasn't around. "I wish you'd tell me when you were planning to go away. I know, I know, but I worry."
Doris mostly ignored the tall man's comments. Whe put up with his presence because he had his uses. Like now, she needed Yagoobian to unload her latest find.
With a grunt, Goob pulled the weird device from the time machine and set it up in an out-of-the-way corner of the park. "So, what's this thing do?" he asked without enthusiasm, as he probably wouldn't understand it anyway.
Tentacles flying deftly over the controls, the bowler hat gave a curt electronic reply as the device hummed to life. The antenna turned slightly, automatically beginning its task of recording the brain patterns of all those passing within range. Little screens flashed with data on the subjects' thoughts and memories, sifting out one specific emotion.
Fear.
<<This machine will tap into the mind of a victim and show Doris their fears. It can then project those fears in a visible form.
You will see the things you fear. They are only images that can't hurt you, but, to the victim, they will seem absolutely real. So real, that you may even think they are touching you. Again, it's all in your mind.
You can defeat them by moving far out of range, or destroying the machine, or by exerting enough willpower to face down your fears.>>
